    Physical Canoeing Resolutions

I found the same information as Rippy when I started researching. I began some weight training a couple winters ago and while I was getting stronger I was surprised, and a bit disappointed, how slowly the gains were coming, especially considering I was starting from a very low point. I learned...

ACA or USCA? Plus Freestyle in the USA vs. Europe.

I would agree with this. Back when I raced canoes a kayaks for a few years I was aware the organizations existed but that's about it. I haven't even thought about them in at least 10-15 years. Alan

Carbon composite canoe build help and advice please

Sorry I'm a bit late to the party. I've been busy this week. Sounds like a fun project. It looks like you've already begun modifying your plans, which I think is good. I was concerned the original plan would be too weak. And with the cost and time involved in building a DIY composite hull it's...

Is this Old Town worth $250? it has many scratches and well worn gel coat

That boat does not have gel coat. It's not a composite canoe. It looks like it's probably made from Royalex. The bottom of the hull appears to be in very good condition. I would not try "fixing" any of those scratches. The only question would be if the seats and thwarts are rotted out but those...

    Ely marathon

If I recall there are sprints (on the water) ahead of the race to determine starting position. They then line up, two by two (I think), downtown on main street for the mass start. Alan

    Ely marathon

That's crazy. I was just thinking how terrible that would be on a windy day when they showed him getting blow around in the wind. Not quite as long of a portage but fun to watch if anyone hasn't seen the start of the yearly Ausable Canoe Marathon: Alan

Elephant (!) charges canoes, attacked woman cheats death

I didn't look up the answers but mosquitoes have gotta be #1. I'll guess dogs are #2. EDIT: I just looked at the list and should have stuck with my gut on #2 but I didn't think the list would go that way. Alan

    Non-Slip Camp Shoes

Wet, lichen covered rocks, are always a hazard for me as well. Shoe soles come in many different configurations, some of which are more sticky than others. A lot of times I'll see people recommend something like "vibram soles are the best" but vibram makes a lot of different soles, some of which...

    Photo of the day

This reminds of the time I asked Ai to create a picture of you moose hunting and it gave me a cartoon of you paddling a canoe with a horny moose.

    More robust vacuum insulated mug/thermos?

A friend bought me a hydro flask. I don't know how much it costs but probably more than I'd pay for one myself. It took about 2 days before I dropped it onto the concrete where it landed on the bottom corner and put a heck of a dent in it. But, as far as I can tell, the vacuum was not...

    Pot Dipper

That's been my general experience. Once removed from the fire I don't ever recall the folding handles getting hot from the contents of the pot/mug. And even with the insulators they can still burn your hands when hot from the fire. Alan

    Pot Dipper

I'm with Al. I burned the insulators off my folding handles and bought replacement silicone sleeves, which I promptly burnt off again. So now I just use insulated leather gloves when cooking and handling the pots, which I always brought along anyway. Alan

    Mora knives for camp.

It looks like @memaquay bought the wrong model of Mora because that one seems to cut onions just fine. Alan

Photos of Animals, Fish, Birds & Bugs on a Canoe Trip

It's always hard to judge the scale of photos like this but the skull looks smaller than I'd expect. Are they smaller than I think? Was it larger in person? Or was it a juveline? Alan

Kudos to Nemo Equipment for their lifetime warranty

Always good to hear a manufacturer that stands behind their product. I had a similar experience with The North Face when I pulled out my old tent and found the outer layer all sticky. The product had been discontinued so they gave me a gift card. Like you there wasn't a lot on the site that I...

    What's up at myccr.com?

I don't visit there much anymore but I checked in today and the most recent post I can find is from September 9th. When I'd checked in a month or so ago there were regular postings at that time. Alan

Thanks for keeping this report going. I'm enjoying it! Interesting scenery. The more I think about this sentence the more confused I get at the multitude of meanings:

Aftermarket roof rack options w/o rain gutters

I don't think weight is nearly as large of a factor as wind resistance. I did a fair amount of trailer pulling with my little 4 cylinder Corollas. One was a manual and the other an automatic. Pulling a small boat trailer converted to carry two canoes is hardly noticeable, even with 2 canoes...
