    Hood strap failure

At least you checked Gamma, some people don’t even think to check. I go by the 1-10-100 rule when I’ve got something on the roof or tied to a trailer. I stop after a mile or so and check the load, then ten miles for another check then everything gets checked every time I stop for whatever...

New To Canoe, But Not To Paddling

Dynel is a fabric like fiberglass it is woven and can conform to contours of a canoe. There is so much great information on this site for builders first time or experienced. Jim

    What are you reading?

I reread Cache Lake Country last winter, it’s a fun read and he had quite the job, paid to live in the woods by the timber company. They even flew in supplies. I’m now rereading Chips From A Wilderness Log by Calvin Rutstrum. Jim

Wasioto Whitehall (Skin on Frame Rowboat) Build

There is a saying ‘putty and paint, makes her what she ain’t ‘. If it were me I would plan on painting the plywood, right from the get go. It will give a better finish to the plywood and a varnished cap will really stand out. Most of your issues (if I understand them) will be covered by paint...

What do you use to rustproof your wood stove in the off season?

Hey Pat, cherish that can of Johnson’s Paste Wax. They stopped making it a couple of years ago, so of course that auction site has even partial cans selling for big bucks. Jim

    97° F (36° C), 108° F (42° C) RealFeel, in NW Connecticut

We had 92° here on the coast of Maine, tried to do some things in the barn and it was hotter there. Just a window air conditioner in the bedroom window, I need a cool room to sleep. Jim

    What are you reading?

I’m half way through Calvin Rutsrum’s North American Canoe Country that I bought at the WCHA a week ago. Prior to that it was Hospital & Haven by Mary Ehrlander about a doctor/minister and his wife and their mission work in Fort Yukon Alaska in 1910 and beyond. It is about a friend of mine’s...

Steel Ring on the Painter Loop

In the bigger boat world of salt water boats, towing a dinghy can put quite a strain on the knot and connection to the dingy. It can create a lot of chafe with all the up and down and slewing side to side unless you are educated on the best towing distance for the speed and sea conditions. The...

    Hood loop tie downs

I think for me it depends on what boat I’m tying down. If it’s the guideboat, I don’t worry too much (except on long trips) because that boat has a lot of shape but the Hornbeck has a very slim shape so a little loosening of the lines and it can move around. Jim

    Hood strap failure

    Hood loop tie downs

Woodpuppy I have tied my Hornbeck on my Subaru the same way and same location. The diagonal line and knot were always a bit of annoyance visually but I put up with it. However last week I loaded the canoe on in the evening for an early start the next day. Next morning it was pea soup fog, really...

Wasioto Whitehall (Skin on Frame Rowboat) Build

If the boat turns out as nice as you hope and someone asks if you can build them one you can always reach out to the designer and work out a licensing agreement. Sometimes it’s the full price of a set of plans per boat often it is less. I sell plans and when I heard someone I knew was building...
