    Physical Canoeing Resolutions

I’ve been battling chronic illness for 30 years; one symptom is exercise intolerance. That means I have to be very careful not to stress it, or I may spend days in pain. Symptoms wax and wane. This summer has been the worst in many years. I have also learned that resistance training is more...

Five Days of FUNctional Freestyle Tripping in the NJ Pine Barrens

What a great trip. Thanks for the informative write-up and super photos. I have a royalex Mohawk 13. It is good on our twisty creeks here. This sort of reminds me of trips through mangrove forests, like on the Fakahatchee River.

Add Dental Floss to your repair kit

I’ve had dental floss in my repair kit for years and years. This past summer I used it to stitch up a ripped mosquito netting. I can’t even remember all the other things I’ve used dental floss to repair.

    Non-Slip Camp Shoes

What is your ankle brace? My broken right ankle tends to roll on uneven surfaces.

    Non-Slip Camp Shoes

This is what I wear: Merrell Moab These are my camp and portage shoes. There is a men’s version too. I’ve never found anything totally slip-proof. I spent a lot of time slipping, I mean walking, on wet rocks this summer. These “stuck” better than the water shoes or booties, when I used them.

    More robust vacuum insulated mug/thermos?

-I don’t like insulated mugs for coffee/hot chocolate in the morning. At least half the point of having a hot beverage in the morning is to warm up my fingers and nose.

    New from Georgia

Thanks! I’m paddled many times the upper Suwannee River. Below White Springs, it gets crowded with motor boats. What’s the motorized traffic on the Altamaha and the others you mention?

    ancient canoe discoveries - Florida

When I was in Indonesia and in Costa Rica I stepped into boats holding hands with the angels because they looked so unstable and overloaded. And what are the young people doing to the boat?

    Four Books from the Megiscane

I am an avid reader and bringing books on canoe trips, even when I am trying to keep weight down, is essential. I've tried bringing a kindle or ipad, but then the battery runs down, or a nasty stick jumps out at me and flips the boat. So I bring actual paper print books. I limited myself to four...

    September BWCA Trip

It’s been a very long time since I paddled in the BWCA and haven’t itched to go back because of the reported crowds/reservations, etc. But maybe a fall trip, after Oct 1. I would take that under consideration.

    Short ONSR (Ozarks) Trip 9/27-9/28/25

Nice trip report. The rivers look similar to the lower section of the Buffalo River I ran back a few years. I’m jealous of the MR Guide. Lost mine in the divorce.

    Mora knives for camp.

I have many mora knives. I typically carry on on me at all times, unless I am going into town. I forgot to take it off once, but no one noticed.
