Need Wenonah 17’ seat and thwart location specs

The stern thwart is 30.5 inches from the center thwart on center. The bow thwart is 29" from the center. The stern seat is 24" from the stern thwart. My boat has a sliding bow seat so I don't know about that. If I were to redo mine, which I hope to do, I would move the bow thwart to the 30.5'...

Tom Foster's Classic Videos on Solo Whitewater Technique

Although I'm not a WW paddler Tom's videos were an inspiration to me to use my hull more to control my boat. Instead of doing it with my bow on WW, I'm doing it with the stern on flat water. I got what he was saying about always paddling in circles. Carving with your stern doesn't give you the...

    The Maine Guide Paddle

That's great, I think you may be my first convert. I've been doing it for about seven years and rarely go to a more centralized position unless conditions warrant it. What boat were you in? Ballast really helps with stability, it allows you to get more lean and the more lean you have the more...

    The Maine Guide Paddle

I misread your earlier post as it being 56", but at 66" it's not too bad for a sturdy tripping paddle. I have a 66" cherry S&T Penobscot that weighs 28oz. I really like it, but it's not rugged. I had it out the other day and needed to use a paddle for balance while walking across a beaver dam...

    The Maine Guide Paddle

The guy I got it from thought it was cedar. I was thinking spruce, but he probably knows better than me. Your Northwoods does sound heavy, I hope you still like it.

Best Places to Live in the US for Canoeing?

If I was looking to buy a place, my main priority would be to find one on a lake, or possibly a river. I would start my searches near major canoeing areas, like the Adirondacks, Boundary Waters or somewhere in Maine. I would look for a lake with the character I like and can afford. I would also...

    The Maine Guide Paddle

I've changed my opinion on what constitutes a Maine Guide Paddle. I got back in town about a month ago and measured the blade on mine. I stated earlier in this thread that it was 8.5 inches wide but was mistaken, it is only 7.5", but 32" long. I took it out on my first paddle after getting to...

    Pot Dipper

Even with the insulated handle they may get hot directly from the fire and not from the hot contents of the pot.

    Pot Dipper

I always have a glove to handle hot stuff when cooking on a fire. I wouldn't try to fix it if it were mine.

    Leftover food

I love leftover spaghetti for breakfast. I've had it many times, at home or camping. Sometimes I'll put a couple fried eggs on top.

Cold handle frying pans, they’re still out there.

I cooked up some miatake mushroom last night. They are also called "hen of the woods" but around here are we call them "sheeps heads" This is the mushroom. It weighed over two pounds, I only cooked a part of it.

I notice that the water looks low. If it were high would you still have a lot of campsite options?

Ai bots threaten the digital canoeing world

I still remember the ones you asked me. What's my favorite brand of canoe, what is the front of the canoe called, and the third one I'm not so sure of. I think it was, would I rather paddle a canoe or my wife? I may be wrong about that one.

iPhone satellite SOS feature sends costly false alarm

I used my iphone to send text messages via sattalite this spring and the SOS feature popped up on my screen for some reason. I was concerned that I could have inadvertantly set it off like a butt dial, but as I recall that wouldn't have been likely.

Bugs in Tent: How to keep them out, kill, or tolerate them?

Gil Gilpatrick used to bring a can of bug spray (not repellent) in case someone left their tent open and bugs got in. It was never a problem so big for me that I couldn't spend a few minutes killing them. Just be careful not to squash them on the tent wall unless you don't mind the bloody mess...
