    Building Canoe Paddles

Nice shop Marc. I see that you make custom paddles, how does that work?

How much have you paddled this year?

A conservative estimate for me this year would be around 350 to 500 miles. I try to take a morning paddle of at least 3 miles and usually get out again throughout the day for another couple miles. I try to get out every chance I can to make up for all the years I worked almost 70 hours a week...

    Throwback Thursday Photos

These are from May 2015 in the Kenai wildlife refuge in Alaska. Notice the anti roll devises in the hot dogs.

I was glad I got out when I did as the winds picked up to 40 mph gusts right after I got done.

Lows Lake/ Hitchens Pond, Late October 2025

That's an interesting idea with the salt on the stove. I'll have to try it. That was a grilled cheese in the pan from the night before. The butter was too hard to spread so I melted it in the pan and put the bread on top. The stove got too hot and I had to grab some wood to use as trivets. They...

Lows Lake/ Hitchens Pond, Late October 2025

Thanks for all the kind words guys. It's hard to believe all those pictures were taken with a phone. I just try to capture images that strike me and hope they will spark a feeling or memory in the future. Here is one Larry took of me. I wasn't sure to post it here or start a new thread titled...

Marc Ornstein: "FUNCTIONAL vs INTERPRETIVE FreeStyle Canoeing"

"Freestyle" is a broad term. It shouldn't matter if you're tripping, paddling twisty streams or whatever, the above statement should be your goal. Learning those Functional moves will just make you better and more efficient. Not to mention it'll make paddling more interesting.

Lows Lake/ Hitchens Pond, Late October 2025

I wish I was able to take a slower pace, but it was a push to see that much of the lake in two paddling days. From the upper dam it was about 28 miles, and I didn't get back into the bay between Virgin Timber and Grassy pond. I really liked site #4, but I'll bet it is a buggy one in season. I...

Lows Lake/ Hitchens Pond, Late October 2025

I made a last minute decision to take my Campfire Tent and wood stove on this trip. I can't believe I almost went without them. I'm too old to camp this time of year without a proper heat source. I was especially looking forward to this trip because I was going to meet up with forum member Penns...

    Greetings From SE Pennsylvania

Welcome to the forum and to canoeing. There are lots of good day trips not too far away. Ive done some write ups on Bradys Lake, Francis Walter Dam, the Susq. and the Delaware among others. Naturally the Susq. and Delaware can be multi day trips. Feel free to hit me up for some info or we can...

    Save the Moose 2025

When to bring the hot tent changes as you get older. Nice trip. I was surprised to see that Nova Craft. Is it a Prospector?

    Felt safe until now

That's too bad Mem, they must be finding food somewhere. We have that problem here in Pa. because some neighbors were feeding them. In AK. it is illegal to feed wildlife, except for bird feeders. Which in Anchorage have to be removed from April until November or something like that. We also...

What leg to push off of. Effect of heeling on forward velocity.

One thing I have noticed is that there is a difference between a subtle heel and a more dramatic heel. With a subtle heel you do get a more comfortable and vertical stroke which I'm sure has benefits. With a more extreme heel you will get the boat carving which can eliminate the need for...

What leg to push off of. Effect of heeling on forward velocity.

I've recently come to the conclusion that being heeled over does reduce forward velocity. For me, when heeled towards my paddle side it eliminates the need for correction strokes because it causes my boat to carve towards that side. This a great energy savings for me, but it isn't quite as fast...

Five Days of FUNctional Freestyle Tripping in the NJ Pine Barrens

FYI, I've had acorns put permanent dings on the hull of my composite Seliga.

    Felt safe until now

I think most of us would agree with this. In reality though, I've been more scared, more times in the bush than in civilization, and I've spent only a fraction of my time in the bush. Check out the thread "Fears while paddling or on canoe trips"

Newby. Help with tandem selection, please.

A center seat is the best position for a serious fishing canoe, IME. Other than that, of the canoes you mentioned I would prefer the Opal over the Heron. I think the 16" stern on the Heron is too low when paddled backwards from the bow seat, and I like the look of the stems on the Opal better...
