    Aluminum or Galvanized Canoe Trailer?

I faced a similar dilemma last summer when my old trailer finally died. An aluminum trailer would have been nice but I ended up with a used, galvanized MegaSport as shown at https://maloneautoracks.com/MegaSport-Kayak-Trailer-w-86-Load-Bars.html from Malone. I also need to occasionally haul...

Will U.S. museums have to remove native birch bark canoes?

North American bark canoes are not traditionally considered "Native American remains, funerary objects and other sacred items" but I suspose that everything is open to reinterpretation. Benson

The Psychology of Choosing the "Perfect" Canoe

Dan Miller was the curator at the Antique Boat Museum in Clayton, New York many years ago and assembled an assortment of canoes that had been described as the 'perfect canoe' from well over a hundred years. It is interesting to see how that definition changed over time. The link below has a...

    Old Town Penobscot 17

Yes, the information at https://www.usps.org/national/safety/HIN/HIN.pdf indicates that it was built in November, 1992 for the 1992 model year. The 1992 catalog page below has more details. Nice score, Benson

Finds, Relics, and Evidence from The Past

I found Pimola's Rock on the Penobscot River in Mattawamkeag, Maine in 2016 as described and shown at the link below, but no relics were evident at that time. Benson https://forums.wcha.org/threads/the-1820-journal-and-plans-of-survey-of-joseph-treat-and-pimolas-rock.14159/

    Old Shaw and Tenney paddle

A similar topic came up a few years ago in the WCHA forum about some different tags. Steven Holt who sold the business to Neil made a guess as described at the first link below. The best person to answer this would be Paul Regan who sold the business to Steven but he has passed away. Their...

    What have I Got Here?

My guess would be a Huron area builder but I have not studied Canadian canoes in depth. I'm not aware of any existing serial number records available for any of the Canadian builders so the number may not help much. Benson

    Free Ancient Canoe?

I agree, the oddly extended stern deck also looks like it may be hiding something. The most valuable part of this canoe may be the diamond headed bolts, which probably aren't worth an eight hour round trip. Oh well, Benson

    Free Ancient Canoe?

My guess is an Old Town from between the early 1920s and late 1930s. It probably had sponsons originally and may be an HW model. This has had some significant repairs in the past. I can offer more details if you can get the serial number from the inside stems. Benson

Blood alcohol and death in cold water

This topic was discussed at some length in the Wooden Boat forum many years ago. The response at https://forum.woodenboat.com/forum/misc-boat-related/160972?p=4981286#post4981286 has a good summary. The short version is that a person who demonstrated survival suits and knew exactly what to...

What are your current solo canoes and how do you like them?

I'm simply kneeling and leaning against the center thwart. My sneakers are white so that makes it look like there could be a foam pedestal. Benson

What are your current solo canoes and how do you like them?

I have an Old Town pack canoe in ABS that is a nice solo boat but my favorite is a 15 foot Old Town from circa 1904 that is probably an HW model as shown below. (The build cards started in October, 1905 and this was made before that.) Their fifty pound models are a very close second. I once...

Photos: Paddling the Mullica River (NJ Pine Barrens) in 1906

There appears to have been plenty of movement inside the canoe, and more will probably follow. There might have been more exterior movement if his paddle wasn't stuck in the mud.

What Do You Do In Winter ?

I thought so, the granite blocks have arrived since I was bicycling (with a Reynolds 531 frame) and paddling there regularly. Gilman Falls has always been a very special place to me for a number of reasons. My great-great-grandfather moved there in 1834 when he was 24 to build and manage a saw...
