Photos of Animals, Fish, Birds & Bugs on a Canoe Trip

Met this friend of Elon's on the Taltson River last summer.

    Puddle Jumper videos

Another Puddle Jumper fan here. Inventive route design, some tough traveling with less drama than many YouTubers. I will confess to having uttered a few impolite phrases myself when tangled in north Saskatchewan alders and old burn. wjmc

14 Days on the Upper Thelon River

Given the trip length of 200 km (193 on the Jackpine site), and the fact that they pass through Eyeberry Lake, it's clear that this trip must have started just below the last falls on the upper Thelon ( a few km above its junction with the Elk river) and ended above the Thelon Canyon. I don't...

2023 Leaf Change and Fall Color Where You Are

In keeping with the Saskatchewan theme - fall colours on Brabant Lake, September 16th. Not a lot of reds in this area, but the yellow and gold of the birch and aspen make a nice contrast with the evergreens.

    R. M. Patterson, canoeing author

Also of interest is "Nahanni Journals: R.M. Patterson's1927-29 Journals" edited by Richard C. Davis. Of note, the fact that Patterson did not reach Virginia Falls by canoe and paddle alone on his first journey, as is described in The Dangerous River. -wjmc

    Gordon Lightfoot

Definitely a paddler - we found a note from a group led by Lightfoot in the cairn at Kazan Falls in 1984. And he had done several other northern rivers -wjmc

You want to take that tub.....where?

I think the answer is "yes". Canada's Back River - regarded by many as the most challenging Barren Lands river- has been paddled in a 17' Coleman, purchased at the Yellowknife Walmart. See https://www.rayjardine.com/adventures/1999-Back-River/index.php Hikers and climbers may recognize this...

    GPS Advice

If the coordinates you were given were lat/long, rather than UTM grid, I don't think a map would have been involved or that datum would have been an issue. Pilots looking at paper maps is a pretty rare phenomenon in the north these days. They probably just took a GPS reading at the site, or...

    Missinaibi River

Yes. A friend of mine from Germany was over this summer paddling the Kazan for 7 weeks. And a couple of American paddlers on myccr - Tom-o and Marten - have done extended Canadian trips this past summer. Perhaps you could get in touch with them regarding their experiences? The Canadian site I...

    Printing maps?

All the Canadian topos are available for free download on line. Once downloaded, you could pay someone with a large format printer to print them for you (expensive) or just snip the sections you need off your screen and print them on ordinary 8.5 x 11 paper - only cost is the paper and toner...

Project Gutenberg eBook of The Long Labrador Trail by Dillon Wallace

The Gutenberg site also offers a free download of Mina Hubbard's "A Woman's Way Through Unknown Labrador", recounting her rival 1905 expedition. Considering that both parties arrived in Northwest River on the same boat and spent time together at the George River post, it speaks to the enmity...

Photos of Portage / Canoe Carry Signs

Most portages where I travel are not signed at all. This was an exception - Whitesand falls / Dam on the Reindeer River in northern Saskatchewan. I suspect lawyers were involved. -wjmc

Brief History and Overvue of construction of a Birch Bark Canoe (new)

Certainly in northern Canada the birch trees were not large enough that a canoe could be made from one piece of bark. An interesting video on the Dogrib (Tlicho) birch bark canoe can be found here. Tlicho territory ran from Great Slave Lake north to the Barrens, where large trees of any type...

Toward The Source: An Arctic Odyssey

I've been in touch with Norton Smith. He has no problem shipping to Canada, it's just a different rate that the website doesn't handle. I've ordered a copy with payment via PayPal, and am looking forward to watching it. wjmc
