Marc Ornstein: "FUNCTIONAL vs INTERPRETIVE FreeStyle Canoeing"

I enjoyed the video. Thank you dutchlennart. I love the song. I’ve never heard it before. I’ve not been tempted to paddle with the lean putting the gunwale so close to the water. There’s alligators in that water where I paddle.

2025 - The Day After The night I was dropped off by the side of the tracks was so horrible I have been unable to write about it. It didn't rain and I didn't get attacked by a bear, but everything else seemingly went wrong; it was confusing and exhausting to an extent I've never before felt. So...

Fears while paddling or on canoe trips

In one of the books I read this summer, there's the following tale. The author approached a well known canoe explorer and asked if he had ever been afraid during canoe trips. The answer: all the time. When I come across that again, I'll post it. I'm starting to think it was a book when I was on...

The local canoe club invited to its annual end-of-season paddling event

Thank you for all the pics and the report. That great blue heron looks like he's saying "What the ****!" That's a lot of teepees. Is that a trend in Europe?

Did you see a lot of cottonmouths? I did when I was up in that area.

Fears while paddling or on canoe trips

Hogs go right through electric fences. We also have bears, bobcats and panthers and in theory pythons.

Fears while paddling or on canoe trips

The wild hogs are horrible where I live. Getting rid of their habitat would be getting rid of all the woods. They tear up my garden, paths, everything. They travel in herds and dig up huge areas. The sows have huge litters and by the time they are half grown, there's a huge sounder.

Michigan Upper Peninsula: Oct BILW Area bummer

Those are some spectacular photos. It is too bad about the Roundup. It’s not allowed to be used in or over water in Florida. Some other chemical less toxic to animals, don’t remember the name.

    Felt safe until now

I stayed with friends near Asheville, NC, who keep the doors locked all the time because the bears know how to open doors. I grew up in a house in suburban Chicago. The doors were never locked.

    Smartphone or tablet as GPS?

You can still order plain paper topo maps from: gotrekkers.com More than one person I met on my trip was astounded that I was navigating with maps and a compass.

Time to build again - Short solo/kid's tandem

It's a beautiful boat. It doesn't matter that it wasn't what you originally planned. That's where the art comes in.

Steel River and a floatplane evacuation - June 2025

Thank you for the detailed trip report. Those log jams are quite something. I saw things like that from the highway on the Gatineau River in Quebec. I really enjoyed your views on the Steele River. The portages are one of the reasons this loop is not on my list. I am really glad to hear that...

    Mégiscane River, Québec

Part 2 It all started 30 years ago with this book: We had learned tandem whitewater on the upper Hudson River with Jerry Jenkins, a one armed paddler and then spent a week at Nantahala back when you could camp for free on the west side of the river. We'd taken our first real 12 day outing in...
