Hello to all from Upstate NY

Welcome, John I suppose you paddle in the ADK’s a lot. Do you have any favorite spots? Places on the list that you haven’t got to yet? Any more pics, maybe from some ADK paddling?

    Getting in and Getting out

My late, life long buddy used this technique to get into his Wee Lassie II.

Doing non-racing things with a racing boat?

I looked at the specs for that V1-A Jensen...I didn't see any cross section views, but if it's designed to fit the USCA cruiser standard, I have lots of experience in USCA Competition Cruisers. I built several strippers as Comp Cruisers. Never raced them, but tripped with them for many years. I...

Bent vs. straight paddle - direct comparison plus bonus footage

I too continue to enjoy these discussions. I have noticed that although paddle velocity and angle have been talked about, there seems to be no mention of the vertical component of the paddle forces. A straight blade paddle pulls the hull DOWN into the water with the rear half of every stroke...

    Out and Back Overnights

I was reluctant to recommend upstate NY… but since snapper broke the ice, I may as well. Move on up here, capital district where I live has every modern convenience without excessive crowds or traffic. Plenty of high paying work too, if you’re still doing that kinda thing. I’m 40 minutes away...

New To Canoe, But Not To Paddling

Home built hulls can be built as tough or as light as you may desire. Selective placement of Dynel will nearly eliminate any accumulated abrasive wear. AFIK, no commercial hulls use Dynel in their layups. I regularly abuse my hulls, beaver drags, beach launching/landing, unsupported loading...

Comparing speed and efficiency of single vs. double blade paddle

Alan, Very, very interesting... Heart rate seems the best way to compare for sure, I'm a cyclist and heart rate is the easiest way to track performance for sure. I do wonder how much energy is wasted by the yaw from the double blade. If only you could also track your course for both paddle...

New To Canoe, But Not To Paddling

Just for reference, dried cypress is 32 lb/cu ft, western red cedar is 22 lb/cu ft. An average solo canoe has roughly one cu ft of wood in it, so a cypress hull wouldn’t be too much of a penalty, weight-wise.

New To Canoe, But Not To Paddling

Mr Bucket, Glad to hear you are active again after the surgery, hopefully you’ll have a few more decades of fun to come. As the others said, welcome to the group, we love pics, so feel free to share when you get back from this trip. One way to get a high performance canoe at a bargain price is...

Paddling advice for long, flat, skinny boats

I guess I'll add to the thread drift... All of the paddles that I build have Phenolic tips, they hold up well to the abuse that I subject them to. Pushing off, rock garden scrapes, beaver dam support. Some of my paddles are over 30 years old and still in good shape, the tips at least. I suppose...

    Getting Kids into Canoeing

I spent much of my childhood going on fishing and camping trips with my father, uncles and cousins, always in the Adirondacks. Couldn't stand the fishing, but I loved the paddling and camping. Fast forward to my return to the ADK's after an adolescent gap, a 92 mile "Long Diagonal" from Old...

If you could take one boat on a Western road trip...

A MINIVAN!! OK, I'll confess to about 7 years of minivan ownership...they (2 different ones) would carry everything and everyone on camping, paddling, skiing trips and get reasonable fuel mileage as well. Back to your original post, I would take my carbon copy Kite. Versatile, fast enough, a dry...

Tripping paddle build higher leverage/higher cadence?

Hmmm, WRT area calculations, I would just transfer the shape to a CAD file, and let the software do the crunching...works every time. I remember days of approximating geometries to determine IP, IT , mass and CG for various rotor components. Took forever and were still just an approximation. Now...

    First build, sanding issues...

Jeff, 1st build, huh? Looks like you must have some previous experience, the hull looks very nice. What did you use for your final sanding? If random orbit, you can usually get by with 80 grit... as long as you don't have excessive cross grain sanding marks you'll be fine. BTW, your work area...

Lows Lake and Bog River Flow ADKs May 2025

Al, Near one of those roadside Horseshoe campsites, there is a good spring, complete with hand laid stone liner. BTW, there used to be more of those roadside sites, but a few folks abused it and set up hardside trailer campers and stayed all season long. And my nephew, who is now 42 years old...

Lows Lake and Bog River Flow ADKs May 2025

Al, Thanks for the TR, next best thing to being there... I've been talking about those cisterns for quite a few years, that Lows guy was pretty enterprising. By the upper dam are the remnants of many, many buildings, I could spend a full day just poking around there. We used to car camp at...

    Help with paddle ID?

That was the maiden voyage of my 17 ft stripper. It weighed 37 lbs at birth, And was a very fast and versatile hull. The build was nearly done on that first trip, I finished lacing the bow seat by the campfire on the first night. Unfortunately, I installed and laced that bow seat upside down, so...

    Help with paddle ID?

I had a pair of Al Camp paddles (not Campaddles) that I bought from an indoor garage sale at RPI in, uhmm, 1978?, 1979? I dunno... They were some of the final stock left from Andy's Sporting Goods, a really good outdoor equipment store that was closing up shop. BTW, they were the only Sawyer...

1981 Mike Galt Essay: "The Solo Path"

We’ve had discussions here before WRT Mike and the intertwined relation with Harry Roberts too. I was a Roberts fan, preferred the sit and switch style in faster, sleeker boats. I used to live a few miles from Harry’s spot in Rotterdam Junction. MDB and I would often see him paddling on the...
