This is the the kind of scarf I would try and make on a bench. The Eds canoe scarf looks like it would be do-able on the boat for splicing in a repair. The short bevels would let you cut the joint a little "long" and sneak up on the fit.

I like this joint a lot better than a standard scarf with a feathered edge. I've seen those let go and the idea of catching a sharp edge while paddling makes my hands itch, like my ankles when there's a short handled axe around....

40 lbs feels really light for a 16 foot hull. The fact that they are 30 - 40 years old is kind of a trip also. I havent spent much time working with a double paddle, but depending on how it handles being overloaded a bit, it might be a nice portagible kayak or skinny pack boat.

There are permiable hay tarps available, I think at tractor supply. If you put one of those over a shade cloth you might get the right ballance between protecting or stewing in juices.

I duct taped the ends of a Merrimack canoe back together after the stems rotted out. I used surplus 100 mph tape which looked ok with all the ends rounded off like a bandaid. My cousins got another 3 summers out of it.
