First stripper build: Prospector-16 Help & comments appreciated

I hope I'm not being annoying interjecting my little snippets here - by no means do I have the experience as some of the others... For seat height, I take one of my shoes and make sure it can pass freely beneath - a matter of safety / avoiding hang ups.

I pained over that - information overload. I found it best to save that until the boat is fully outfitted then find the balance point and use that for the basis of your calculations. I have a 2" steel pipe from who knows where and I lay it on the floor and sit the hull on it - moving it fore and...

What was the first river you ever paddled?

I don't remember how old I was - probably 10 or 12. We had a cottage in St Zenon, QC and the neighbour's son and I took his canoe out for a few hours on La Riviere Noire. No that one - I'd guess there about 50 rivers in QC that go by that name. Later, when I was 14, another friend and I took his...

Electrical device you are most likely and least likely to eliminate

Just a thought - a functioning flashlight is part of Transport Canada's legal requirements, along with a whistle, floating rope, and hard-sided bailing bucket.

Electrical device you are most likely and least likely to eliminate

I need my headlamp and InReach. The InReach is primarily for emergencies but it's great for determining portage sections / halfway points / trip-and-a-half segments. I take my phone but it stays powered down and lives in a ziplock. I could easily be without it. I can hear the booing and...

Such is the curse of the builder. To be clear, I wasn't saying not to do your level best, but simply not to sweat it too much. Look up my Bob Special build. A robin got stuck in my garage and took a massive dump on the hull, staining it almost through-and-through. I chose to laugh about it.

You could slap one together with the most ham-fisted disregard for looks and people will still stop to compliment you on your creation. It's virtually impossible to make an ugly cedar strip. I'm only half-kidding here - count on an extra 15 minutes at the ramp to deal with the questions.

    Toothbrush Replacement

I bought a bunch from that place that starts with an "A" - 30 of each for like a $1.50 CDN a piece.

Whatever works for you. I cut the bulk off with a utility knife then snuck up on the line with a sharp chisel, finishing off with a 4" piece of sandpaper spray-glued to 2' long, scrap strip.

    Just wanted to say hello

Looks great, Pat. Welcome. I get worked up over glassing, too - not a big fan of working to a strict timetable. A number things that helped me Thoroughly clean your work area before you start. Transform it from a wood shop to a finishing room. Line your work areas/benches with craft paper Lay...

Things that interfere with or otherwise screw up canoe trips

As I write this from my couch, my wife lying down next to me and both of us with positive PCR tests... September 2019: I had just returned from an Algonquin, Pinetree-Sylvia, there-and-back trip with my nephew. Earlier that year, my wife and I rented an H2O Prospector 16-4 and this time my...

    Left behind item

Love my UCO - we spent an entire rainy day in the tent and it made it a little more bearable. Bit of a stretch, but I left a soft cooler with 3, 8"x2" links of dried/cured salami in a hotel in Renfrew. Realized around Barry's Bay and called the hotel to let them know. I'm a little obsessive...

    Sunglasses

Same - my premium (i.e. wide view) progressives were going to cost over $900. I got them from Zenni for $292 and they came with clip-ons. I'll go against the grain here and say that I wish I could get non-polarized clip-ons. Polarized lenses do not play nice with acrylic motorcycle visors - cars...

If my strips had a knot, I would give them a couple of good bends/tweaks and if they held they'd go on as is.

Simple bannock and other reflector oven ideas

No recipe to share, but powdered peanut butter is a bannock game-changer. Whatever the recipe, I usually whip up a batch at home before committing - strictly for testing purposes, of course. Edit: Nephew delighted in chopping up some pepperettes to mix into a savoury bannock. Genius he is.
