    Looking for some paddle insights

You'll notice that I leave the fiberglass weave exposed, on the blade. Scratches don't show too much with the exposed weave. Filling the weave with additional epoxy only adds weight, no significant strength. Unless I'm doing a very fast in-water slice, the exposed weave doesn't appear to inhibit...

Touch up painting a wood/Dacron Loon Works

First off, there is no epoxy involved in Loonworks Canoes. Tom generally painted his canoes with oil based, marine paint. The brand sometimes varied based upon color choices/availability. As for sanding: The Dacron fabric is quite thin. Sand only enough to dull the old paint and feather any...

    Looking for some paddle insights

I just completed an ultra light river/touring blade for a friend/client. The blade is mostly pawlonia with redwood and walnut reinforcements and accents. The blade is edged with Dynel. The shaft has fiberglass reinforcement between the paulonia core and the walnut faces.

What oil to use on a bare paddle shaft?

I've gone to using flat varnish on the grip and shaft, gloss on the blade. The flat varnish provides a feel that is quite similar to oil but IMO seals the wood better. I've found that Helmsman, spar urethane seems to hold up as well as some of the more expensive varnishes that I used to use...
