PFDs: Class 3 or 5 PFD for Whitewater?

Type 5 PFDs are "special use". The addition of a rescue belt to the design can change a Type 3 into a Type 5 without any other mods.

    Stress Relieving Paddle Design

I don't know the mechanics of your shoulder issue, but with an ottertail, the power comes on slow and steady as you progress through the stroke. It's a favorite of mine for smooth water canoeing

Sharing your location dot with spouse

No. I don't have a gps, I don't have an inreach. I paddle alone most of the time. I carry my basic flip phone in a waterproof box. I don't carry a gun. I'm not afraid of bears and wolves. I like maps and compasses and the idea that I am on my own to solve my own problems... it keeps me honest.

I’d like to see your wood (gunwales that is), plus a question

I use Watco. My canoe is canoe is 16 years old, and I've owned it for 12 years. I paddle 80-90 days a year and store the canoe inside. I see my canoe is a work boat and the gunwhales aren't pretty, but there is not a spot of rot anywhere, and that's all I care about. Maybe once a month, I...

Looking back on 2024 and what’s ahead for 2025

The season here in southern CT is 12 months long. So, I do put it away.... but it it is definitely scratchier than most.

Looking back on 2024 and what’s ahead for 2025

I got in 131 days in 2024. All day trips, almost all solo, all out-n-back, but I got into a few new-to-me rivers. I really like what I've been paddling in western Rhode Island, it's worth the drive.

Solo Composite Canoe that can do it all 😉

Wenonah Solo Plus. 16-6 long, a little wider than most pure solos, reasonably fast and stable. Catches a little wind when empty, but plenty of volume to carry weight. I took the bow and stern seats out of mine. mine is kevlar/flexcore with gelcoat - 50 lbs true. I have about 900 days in mine.

Charity paddles- what length do you think?

They'll get hung on a wall, and the new owners will call it an oar...ha! When I make a paddle for someone, I always take it out and use it before giving it to them, even if only for a hundred yards, because then it becomes a "canoe paddle". And by all means, the dress flannel shirt...and DEET...

Kayak vs Canoe - Your Personal Pros and Cons

I love when the SOT crowd gets to the first beaver dam. That's where you find out the "why" to a canoe.

    A "Tail" of Two Otters?

I've carved a few ottertails and voyagers. The curved side ottertail with a slightly rounded tip is superior. The entry is quieter and the paddle stroke is smoother. I really like the ottertails that I've made, and find the voyageurs second rate and not worth the time. The voyager with its...

Carrying a gun when canoe traveling just because

F it. I think I'll just check out of this forum.

Carrying a gun when canoe traveling just because

This whole thread just doesn't need to be in a canoe tripping forum. How many hand grenades should I carry to defend myself against a angry racoon?

Dumb Idea? Drift Sock for Downstream Propulsion?

It's an invention that did not need to be invented, by someone who doesn't know what they are doing.

New gear for 2024 and 2025?

Pants. I bought 3 pairs of lightweight quick drying pants from Costco for under $20 each. I replaced a Kokatat drysuit that I had pretty much worn out.

    Hatchet or Saw?

Saw. I don't use an axe often enough to be proficient with one, and one should feel comfortable with that tool before taking it into the backcountry.

    Packing a Handgun for Wolves

Where does this fear of wolves and black bears come from? If I was that concerned about being attacked by wolves, I'd just stay home and watch reruns of Wild Kingdom.

Video: Paddler and boat trapped in low head dam

I don't appreciate any of those clowns. If one of them insisted on running a low head dam, the others should have already been in place with the throw bags ready to go. It was that dangerous. Pulling him out with a harpoon gun would've been the proper technique
