    Felt safe until now

I guess you're wrong. My first trip to Alaska and the Yukon was in 1976. But the point is, this thread is not about far north traveling where a gun is an acceptable idea. It's just a bunch of gun squids imagining that they need to pack heat to protect themselves from squirrels in the lower...

    Felt safe until now

Fine. But this thread is about a 100 miles off of its original comment. It started as a worry about a domestic violence murderer who was believed to be near the Adirondacks. Now it's just gun crap. I think I'll just check out for awhile.

What does it have to do with canoeing? NOTHING.

You guys just can't top talking about guns. WTF does this have to do about canoe tripping? This thread should have been canned a long time ago.

    Kneeling and Knee Friction

Sounds so complicated. I just glue in some 3/8 closed cell foam pads with contact cement. Doesn't slip, lasts for years.

    Boiled Linseed Oil

I have used Boiled Linseed Oil on my hand-carved paddles. While it preserves and protects the wood, it does mildew. Usually, the mildew stains can be removed with some light sanding. I heat the oil for my first coat so that it penetrates better. Tung oil cures to a harder and longer lasting...

    Living better electronically

Doubt is a good thing to have in your pocket when traveling in the wilds. I don't remember who said this - Always carry a big pocketful of chickensh*t when canoeing solo in the wilderness

    Living better electronically

I have a compass, and maybe a map, and I pay close attention to my surroundings. But just for fun, I always carry a couple of dead batteries.

American Whitewater Accident Report - January - July 2025

The Swiss cheese analogy of accident analysis. While the information is good, the analysis is a little weak. Most of the fatalities occurred from a combination of decisions. A bar chart showing solo paddling as a significant issue is off base. The solo fatalities involved multiple bad...

    Felt safe until now

I just absolutely love it when canoe tripping becomes a discussion about guns. If you're going to the far north, fine, carry a gun as defense against the big bears. If you think you need a gun to go to the Adirondacks or the BWCA or Quetico, just stay home. Let's just end this thread, please.

So what exactly is everyone up to in their non-boating hours?

I'm an artist, and my primary medium is hand-sewn beadwork. I spend a lot of time sewing.

    Badger Finally!

I now use Watco teak oil on my hand-carved paddles. It works great and it does not mildew like boiled linseed oil. I have tried real tung oil, but have never seen any difference - I don't see it as worth the extra money. Varnish, unlike oil, is waterproof. Small nicks in the varnish will trap...

Roll Call for West CT, SW MA and MHV NY Canoeists

You can put me on your list, as long as you're not mean to me. I'm in Milford.

    Gerber River Shorty

Mine is on the bottom of the Rogue River. Crappiest river knife sheath ever, it wasn't the first time it popped off.

    Quiet Blade Shape

Ottertail. The narrow tip enters quietly, the power comes on gradually. Quietest paddle I've ever used

    What's out West?

Diablo does maintain a jolly 50F water temperature all summer long. Ross tops out in the lower 60's.. We got surprised by 30mph winds on Diablo that came up with no warning - steep 2-1/2 ft waves, it was a struggle to get to shore right side up. The NPS campground registration system for Ross...

Finds, Relics, and Evidence from The Past

In general, an artifact has a cultural context. Time is irrelevant in whether or not the item is an artifact. Field archaeologists will collect and document modern trash found at an ancient site. When an artifact is removed from its context without proper documentation, it becomes a relic...

    What's out West?

Mason is referring to the Snohomish River Estuary. I used to live in that area. I have 4 entries in my blog. It is a great spot. https://canoepost.blogspot.com/search?q=snohomish You'll find entries in my blog for all of the stuff below. I would also recommend the Yakima Canyon for a day...
