Winter camp is ready to go.

We have 80 acres. to get winter camp it is literally up hill the entire way there. My house is nearly in one corner of our property and on a diagonal to just about the furthest opposite corner is where these pines are, thus winter camp. Due to steep valleys and ridge tops I can not walk a...

Winter camp is ready to go.

Great question about the water. I have a steel kettle, a large steel coffee pot ( percolator ), and a steel water jacket with spout I can hang on the side of the stove. It is ok when it freezes, it thaws easily, quickly on the stove. Making coffee or hot chocolate is a luxury to enjoy after...

Winter camp is ready to go.

Split some fire wood, got my stove blasting and when warmed up some I collected kindling for my future outings. What a great day to be in the timber ... just miss my old buddy Jake. It is just too darn cold for him to join me ... and boy is he pissed I left him home.

Winter camp is ready to go.

Well today is just too pretty to stay inside! 15 below and bit of a north wind but I need water in winter camp so today I humped nearly a mile on my newly broke snow shoe trail with Portage pack and tump with 4 gallons of water, not too heavy with my snow shoes and good trail.

Thoughts on small tandems for solo use / Brand Preference

I second the Nova Craft Pal, as well as the Eaglet. I paddle tandems solo exclusively. I paddle day trips or wilderness trips in them with my 70 pound dog and gear, solos just do not cut it for me. The Pal is more maneuverable than the Eaglet, but Eaglet is a bit less tender. Both are very...

    Cold Hauling

Glad you made it safe Blackfly, what an adventure. Your canoe looks like it took that trip well … fun to imagine what other, more pleasant adventures you will have with it! Bob

Stay safe in this big storm ...

Alan, I hear about your dog. Jake‘s hip is real bad. When temps are this cold and snow so deep, he can not keep up with me anymore when I snow shoe … he just gets stuck and shivers or tries to keep a paw out of the snow. He is just too old.

Stay safe in this big storm ...

5 below here, and dropping with high winds. Broke trail today with my snow shoes, much better than yesterday but still, breaking trail sucks. With this cold weather it will be a nice hike up that trail to winter camp this week.

Poll: Survey of Portage Pack Bracket Solution for Carrying Canoes on Hiking Pack

I voted no. It looks clever and likely works very well. However, my main pack is is a large duffle sack that I tump. My lunch portage pack is small and light enough to carry while portaging my canoe. My packs with out a frame fit well in the canoe and the small one molds to my back and is...

Stay safe in this big storm ...

Walked over a mile and a half to winter camp and back today to remove the snow load from the roof. Was not necessary as the slick tarp had the snow sliding off. That said, I am an idiot for not taking my snow shoes ... and am pretty tired from fighting through the snow. Definity will use them...

Stay safe in this big storm ...

Agreed! I sometimes forget how blessed we are to have our house tucked behind a large ridge that blocks us from the North West wind. I was telling my wife, I think this weather is much ado about nothing, it is barely snowing outside. Later, my neighbor texted he needed some assistance - he is...

Stay safe in this big storm ...

Snowing like mad here in South West Wisconsin. We are in the 8-12 inch of snow prediction range - with some locations in the area expecting more. The wind is picking up and advisories to stay off the roads are increasing, expecting blizzard - white out conditions today and tomorrow. This is...

Stay safe in this big storm ...

Wow … I guess we are pretty lucky. Winters have become odd weather makers lately. I am so glad we are not dealing with torrential rains and flooding or tornadoes. We received another 2 inches last night with a blizzard coming tomorrow, 6-12 predicted with high winds on top of our 10 plus...

Stay safe in this big storm ...

Well a large part of the country is in a winter storm. Heavy rains and floods in Florida to freezing rain to heavy snow fall up north. We are expecting about 8 more inches to add to the 4-5 that has dumped on us already. The winds are making a mess of things, but it is nice to have a little...

    Fry Pan vs Porridge Pot

Well, as I often mention, I paddle solo … so my cooking only has to satisfy me. I do not carry oil nor breading but eat walleye often on a trip. I boil my fish. I do season it, but it is boiled not fried. Easy to clean, ( the pan ) no lingering odors enticing larger critters, but mostly I...

    Happy New Year Everyone

I wanted to wish everyone on this board a happy and safe new year. My wife and I were going to go out for dinner ... but my son needed me to watch his dog . I posted about that in another thread. Well, now my daughter needed me to watch her dog today and tomorrow. So ... nothing like taking...

One canoe to rule them all?

I did the following write up comparing Nova Craft Pal and the Polaris. Side note, if a Prospector was not available as a do all one boat special, either of these two would fit the bill … but the Prospector really is a do all if you just could only have one. “Art, I have tripped in both boats...
