    Waxed canvas tarp/wool blanket

Lots of good information/ideas for some classic bedrolls and covers. I was going to make my own waxed tarp and lay a lightweight rug over it but I went with the one I purchased. Having the wool blanket sewn to the tarp seems like it will stay in place better. Like a wood canvas canoe, entering...

    Waxed canvas tarp/wool blanket

I don’t have a floor in my small wall tent so I recently ordered a combination waxed canvas tarp with a wool blanket sewed to it. While it’s not an exact match to my tents floor dimensions, if I fold the sod cloth in at the bottom of the tent walls it will fit nicely and help keep out those...

    Another Chestnut(?)

Boatman53 said: “Stupid question but did you try nailing the ribs with the boat rightside up? gravity helps. That’s to only way I’ve been able to rib repair a canoe without help which was most of the time. Don’t hesitate to ask me for help on site, I don’t live that far away and will work for...

    Motorized Canoes

Those are some great old pictures Rusty, hard to beat a square stern and children fishing out of them. My grandson loves fishing and my 16’er is just right for the two of us.

Kayak vs Canoe - Your Personal Pros and Cons

I remember when Canoe and Kayak Magazine was just Canoe Magazine, Collinsville Canoe and Kayak in Connecticut was just Collinsville Canoe. Lots more examples out there like these. When I used to visit Pnet it seemed like most of the conversation was dominated by kayakers, especially the off...

    What are you reading?

I just started re reading Trap Lines North, interesting story of a family in Nakina, Ontario back in the 30’s. There is actually a website Traplinesnorth.proboards.com with a ton of interesting information about the book/family/area.

    Swedish boatbuilder/paddle builder/guide/ introduction video

Yes, I’m an IG guy. Beavertail100, I have over 1500 followers. What I like about IG is that I have fine tuned my algorithms to my interests, I.e., wood canvas canoes, canvas tents, traditional gear, traditional canoe camping, 18 wheelers, old pick up trucks, Vietnam war. I still visit...

    Motorized Canoes

After a few days paddling the lakes of down east Maine, our group stopped to visit Dale Toby’s shop in Grand Lake Stream. Dale builds and repairs wood canvas canoes and square stern canoes (Grand Lakers) Dale is in the green checkered jacket, he is also a fishing/hunting guide out of Grand Lake...

    Motorized Canoes

Schuyler told me that a fishing club in Pennsylvania asked him to replace their aging fleet of similar boats. He made some adjustments to keep it more canoe like than the boats they had. He built a form and I think he made them 1/2 a dozen at least, plus he had a couple of his customers build...

Trap Lines North Fans....I've got something cool

    Motorized Canoes

I like my 16’ wood canvas square stern canoe built by Schuyler Thomson in Norfolk, Ct. I never really thought I would own one but I couldn’t pass up the deal. It has a 2.5 hp 4 stroke Yamaha which moves it along fast enough for my needs, and it’s great for taking my grandkids fishing.

NH PBS Paddle thru History series

There’s a new series on YouTube documenting a 1500 mile canoe trip starting in Old Town, Maine, going as far south to NYC, west as far as Syracuse NY, thru Lake Ontario then down the St Lawrence to Quebec City, then south back to Old Town. The paddlers are for the most part indigenous from...

Another new camping trend - individual tents

When I have gone with groups I always bring my own tent. Unfortunately I have gone with groups who made a beeline to the prearranged campsite towards the end of the day and grabed the premo spots. I’m not a fast paddler, never in a hurry, so I had to set up in some awkward spots. I actually...

    Mad River in Billings

Sounds like the OP is leaning towards patching up the existing wood. While I’m no expert on Kevlar canoes, when I did work on them, I noticed how thin the sides where and how much the canoe depended on a strong gunnel system for structural stability. I also found that aged wood gunnels as...

Kevin Callan: Death of the Campfire

Almost spiritual, the way Odyssey lites a campfire. You couldn’t pay me enough to have missed spending time around our evening campfires. Summit Lake, Marshall Lake circuit. L-R, Christy, Brad, (Odyssey), Mirand, (Mrs. Odyssey) Karin, Memaquay

Kevin Callan: Death of the Campfire

On my last 3 night trip, base camped with my new Campfire tent I had campfires mornings and evenings for cooking and ambiance. When tripping I got into the habit of cooking over a twig stove, sometimes even using the twig stove to take the chill off. I really stopped having campfires as I aged...

    Marc-Andrea Pauzé

"The wearer moves in a fluid gesture to install the raft on his shoulders, and once it is well balanced, he begins to cross the path several millennia old." He goes from rock to rock with the ease of a balancer on a wire wire. In addition to allowing us to jump an obstacle or connect two lakes...
