Fresh paint to the 16’ Chestnut Cruiser

When I finished restoring this canoe a few years ago I only gave it two coats of paint, it’s a tripping canoe, the second coat looked ok back then. I just sanded it down with 150 grit on a 1/4 sander and applied the 3rd coat. I added a little gray paint to help freshen up the old paint in the...

    Poling the Farmington River, CT?

In Riverton, Ct there is a nice parking lot where Hogback Rd and rt 20 meet, I have poled there. Just south of Hogback Rd on rt 20 about a mile or so is a bridge where rt 20 crosses over the Farmington. There is a parking lot/put in on the west side of the river at the bridge, decent poling area...

    Relaxing Canoe Camping

When you look in the dictionary for the word relaxing, there should be a link to a James Carey video.

    Workin’ on the fleet

I have been cleaning up my canoes recently, varnish, new paint and new spruce gunnels. I even was able to fix a slice in the canvas to my square stern. The weather here in Maine has been great for painting and varnish and I have a couple of trips planned, so It’s a busy time. I even made a new...

Single sided correction strokes - Does your paddle touch the hull?

This bothers me, I prefer to give animals as wide a berth as reasonably possible, why stress them?

    The Maine Guide Paddle

I purchased an old Bobs and it came with this six foot paddle. I’m pretty sure it’s cedar, 30” , about 8” at the widest point. I prefer a narrower shaft and traditional handle. I damaged it at home and spliced a piece of pine into it. I use it in my square stern now, it’s great for all the...

    What are you reading?

Do you know there is a website/forum called “Trap Lines North” (https://traplinesnorth.proboards.com/) Although it doesn’t get much activity these days, it’s got a lot of great information and pictures about the book and familys. I help moderate it, keep out those pesky Middle East trappers...

    Chestnut Fox for sale

That’s in very good condition, hard to find an original as clean as that anymore. The Fox is a fine paddling canoe.

    Bell Creek Runner

I’m not sure if mine came from Cliff’s book, maybe. I made it out of an old 4 man Ureka Timberline tent fly. That same material can be found today as lightweight tarps and even bought by the yard. My canoe was a wood canvas canoe so I didn’t want to install snaps. I sewed a cord into the...

What do you use to rustproof your wood stove in the off season?

IDK, sitting out in the shop, smoking cigars, drinking beer and listening to Bryan James just gets those gear “tinkering” juices flowing. Been too humid to paint canoes, gotta do something. Me too, every day I make new plans, pretty soon I have to load up and go.

What do you use to rustproof your wood stove in the off season?

Yea buddy, the stove comes in handy, especially on cold mornings! Thanks, I used a wire wheel on my Dewalt “cutter grinder”, knocks off the rust quickly. My stove has seen a lot of use, now over 100 nights, although I sleep with it cold.

What do you use to rustproof your wood stove in the off season?

So I used a wire wheel to clean off a light coat of rust, then applied a light coat of EVO, (extra virgin oil) to the stove and my favorite tripping cold handle frying pan. I ignored the interior, it's got a light coat of rust but after so much use its still solid, even both the false floor and...
