Lewis and Clark dugout canoe display

Thought I’d share a photo of a display of a dugout canoe being built. This is a model on display at the Lewis and Clark Interpretive Center at Washburn ND. Pretty cool little museum, and I thought this display was pretty neat.

Cabin fever here waiting for winter to end. I’ve had my canoe hanging from the ceiling since I finished it. I hadn’t weighed it since varnish, so took it down and weighed it. 37.7 lbs. Ice out in April feels like a long time away.

    BWCA Permits

I’m a BWCA virgin. Got on the Recreation.gov website right at 9 am Wednesday, and got my first choice. Not sure if it was luck, or my choice of entry point and date. But I’m very excited to go. Permit is for EP 54 on Seagull lake on September 15th.

Thanks Alan! Yes I had plenty of frustrations along the way, but got through the challenges by taking a step back, looking to this site for answer. Oh the dog lol, she has that thing on, to prevent her from licking a sore.

Thanks for the kind words! I couldn’t have done this without people like you that share their knowledge here. The Bronco is a ’22. it has the Sasquatch package which comes with 4.7 gears in the axles, electronic lockers front and rear, factory capable beadlock wheels, among other things. The...

I have all the same flaws you just mentioned. But, I’m tickled pink. And I’ve went through your build thread, and your boat is gorgeous! If I remember right, you have plans for another with a unique wood. As for my next plans, I’m going to attempt to carve a paddle out of some cherry.

I ended up cutting out a few of the spots, put a bit of epoxy in. While that cures, I decided to start varnish on the outside. First coat is on.

Yes, they are on the inside. Appreciate the sage advice! Thinking I may just run with varnish and call it good. I’m so sick of sanding!

Been sanding away, thinking I’m ready for varnish. However, I have some dry spots. Mix up some epoxy and do a light fill coat? Fill individual spots with epoxy? Or just go forward with varnish? Here’s a couple photos of my problem areas.

Beautiful boat! The plans for my boat only call for the single thwart, although I could most certainly add another. It would make a great place to put a cup holder for beer.

Thanks Jim! Your seats are beautiful, and the plan is to varnish the cord. I agree the seat is pretty high, it’s 1 inch below the gunwales, and has a 1 inch drop built into the seat frame. I want to try it out, and if it’s not real stable, I’ll drop it another inch.

Construction phase is done. I was going to use cleats to fit the seat, but after hours of frustration, gave up and decided to hang the seat. Built the seat a bit thicker than others, went with 1 1/8 x 7/8 for the frame, as I’m pretty heavy at 260, hope it holds me. I used snow shoe lacing on the...
