    Photo of the day

Today was hot and humid … good day to practice the patience of my pup. This is the last practice day before our short trip to the Turtle Flambeau Flowage in Wisconsin … it will be Max’s first trip. We paddled about an hour with a tripping load of gear. Max did settle and responded well to...

    Photo of the day

My dogs and I have a short trip planned for mid August. Jake is a veteran of many trips deep in the bush. This will be my pup Max ( 10 months ) first experience. Here we are exploring and practicing on the Trempealeau river, very twisty and lots of current. Max is settling in the canoe...

    Solo Canoe for Dogs

I have found tandems set up for solo best for long days paddling and dogs. My veteran tripping dog is 10.5 years old. He moves around often to ease his painful joints. He is often accompanied by my 8 month old pup who is doing well, but clearly still in the train phase. Hemlock Eaglet, set...

What is your local day paddle?

As my pup progresses with his canoe training we find more challenging water to work in. Yesterday our local paddle was the Wisconsin River. We explored a sandbar and some thick timber along the backwaters.

Solo Composite Canoe that can do it all 😉

I should say I like the Eaglet a lot. I find I am most happy in symmetrical hulls. I paddle on one side and like an easily maneuverable canoe. The Eaglet is very good in the shallow twisties and bigger wind swept waters with large waves … especially if paddled solo. If I could kneel and...

Solo Composite Canoe that can do it all 😉

Mine is cedar. I rub hemp oil on it like 1 time a year, works great. Once in the back waters off the main river channel, I slide it behind me, out of the way … stuck out a bit off the gunnel in front of me but not an impediment … and use my sassafras guide paddle.

Solo Composite Canoe that can do it all 😉

Tsuga8, Yup, Greenland paddle. That one is Very light and moves the boat well in wind and up river current ( Wisconsin river can be 3 plus mph ) an exhausting paddle after a few miles so much easier with the Greenland. It is like 108 inches, works well for Lilly dipping … I do not sling water...

What is your local day paddle?

Local day paddle update. Practicing with my pup, we paddled farther from shore, longer distance and practiced doing a portage yesterday. He is really settling in. Jake has been instrumental in calming him and showing him the ropes. I love paddling and hiking with these guys. Bob.

What is your local day paddle?

Lately my local day paddle has been Cox Hollow Lake in Governor Dodge Stare Park near my home. I have been canoe training my nearly 8 month old pup named Max. He is a Hanoverian Scent Hound. He is also training with me on wounded deer recovery and therapy dog work. Day paddling has been a...

Ravenwolf, Here are the last of the pics that may be of assistance as well … I forgot to add them above. I hope this gives you a much better idea of what you are looking for without being able to see one in person. Good luck to you.

Couple more pics of the canoe … hope this helps you to “ see “ what it is like in this configuration. Bob.

Solo Composite Canoe that can do it all 😉

Ravenwolf, My Eaglet has a lowered seat with backrest ( crazy creek ), kayak foot braces and currently has one seat only. It was purchased as a tandem and reconfigured to be a large solo for myself and my dog. Set up this way it paddles very well … I still have less power and balance than...

Solo Composite Canoe that can do it all 😉

I have an Eaglet, and find it excellent as it is narrower and symmetrical, both traits that speak to me. I love mine, even in ultra light layup it is robustly built from the waterline down. I did not mention it as it is under 17 feet. Still, as a solo it remains nimble and holds a lot of...

Solo Composite Canoe that can do it all 😉

Like Al mentioned, tandems paddled solo is the way I travel in the back country. My first suggestion would be to second the NorthStar Polaris canoe. Next on my list would be the Nova Craft Cronje, read the review from Darren Bush, he explains it nicely. Very nimble, light and fast. 17 feet...

Double blade paddle . . . worth it?

Ok … at the risk of espousing blasphemy here goes … I am a die hard single blade j-stroke, guide stroke canoeist. That said, due to some physical limitations of the youth leaving my knees, I can no longer kneel. This has left me a much less powerful paddler. I now require foot braces and a...
