    2025 Canadian Wildfires

Although a natural occurrence, fires are bigger and more frequent than what’s natural. Human densities and climate change are bound to negatively impact the resource by way of wildfires. I hate hearing the “But fires are natural” argument. Nothing natural about what’s happening to the planet.

No longer planning on a Wabakimi trip this year.🙁 Hope to be able next year. Got all the maps for a route. Going to BWCA if the stars align just right.

How’s the BWCA-Quetico area? I’ve got plans for September, if life cooperates.

Drilling Lining Holes in My Hull

Glen, I answered you in a later thread. T

    Lining Harness?

I’ve never tried a bridle, but I wonder how long it takes to throw that hitch in moving water on a loaded boat? Takes me a few seconds to tie off to lining holes, faster if Im already tied on, expecting the walk.

Defaced another boat - Adding lining holes

Yes, the tubes are epoxied in the box adapters.

Defaced another boat - Adding lining holes

Glen asked me about drilling foam of the floatation chamber in my last post about this process, but I hadn’t encountered foam in my previous efforts. This stem had foam. The key was to clear the hole saw of the composite circle and foam debris before going too deep. Got a nice clear tubular...

Got the wife to ditch the yak

Dude, I just spent 4k on a new tripping boat. Trying hard to stay married.

Got the wife to ditch the yak

With my current physical condition, Im not able to load, unload her kayak. As a bonus, we can take both dingoes (although it’s a pain since they both want to ride with me).

    Hood loop tie downs

I use blue tape on my hood where the straps touch, bring them under the hood when not in use.

    Hood strap failure

On my trailer, I add a rubber strap as a secondary measure. I feel like the trailer is more secure than the car top. Too many connections, opportunities for failure up there. Going to replace my hood straps this year. You got me thinking.

    Things that have Improved

I just added a new set of Yakima KeelOver cradles for my load bars. I can now carry two canoes on the roof rack if need be. The older cradles were purchased a few years ago. I noticed the new cradles are more rigid and fit the bars better. Any canoeing equipment you’ve been happily surprised...

    Seat Pad

Yes, I actually use that pad with my Swiftie. A more narrow version or similar one, would be great to find for the Northstars.

    Seat Pad

It’s tough to gauge comfort without testimonial. Im hoping to find one that not only supports my booty, but also straps on between the attachments of my backrest. Cushgear might want to expand the width of its Backsaver because it attaches right where seat cushions with straps attach. Some...

    Seat Pad

After ann extensive search I found a pad to fit my Swift bench seat, Im hoping to upgrade my NW Solo seat pad. Currently using an inflatable that is ok for short periods, a pain to inflate. Anyone found a durable, non-inflatable standard size pad that cushions decently?

    Delivery of New Northwind Solo

I was able to use my standard removeable yoke. To protect the CF gunwales, I dipped the aluminum tangs in rubber, and added some gorilla tape on the gunnels where contact is made. The gunnels are thicker and angled on the inner lip, so the yoke doesn’t fit perfectly. I’ll need to be careful...

    Hood strap failure

I rotate my homemade straps under the hood. They seem to be solid. I’ll definitely check them out.

Thoughts on double bladed paddles from a somewhat experienced double blader.

I did a test using an app some months ago, and for raw efficiency and speed, it was no contest. Double blade excels. I’ve found the 260cm paddle works best for my size and canoes. I’ve used a double in a variety of solo canoes. There’s no replacing it. I do prefer a single blade many times...

    First Paddle in NW Solo

I think I’ll remove the grab loops and tie down to the holes. I’ll tie my painter there when paddling. A solo canoe don’t need no stinking grab loops. I doubt those holes are epoxied to the hull. Look like they’re rubber sealed.
