Show us pictures of your canoe vehicle with boat(s)

Two of my favourite canoe vehicles. At the end of a trip, the canoe has been transferred to the 2015 Subaru Crosstrek from the 1979 Cessna 185-F. Aircraft are very lightweight. The Cessna, with me, the pilot, my gear, 400 miles of fuel and the canoe on board weighed almost exactly what the...

    What are you reading?

I agree with Alan about "Letters from the Barren Lands". It's a fascinating read for anyone with an interest in the Hornby saga. The editor, Carsten Iwers, is a veteran Arctic paddler. His website, northof60.de, is well worth a visit for some exceptional photography. wjmc

Thelon River, Northwest Territories & Nunavut (1993)

Another enjoyable report. Regarding your experience with the final rapids above Baker Lake, I checked the flow data. In August 1993, the Thelon at the outflow of Schultz Lake had an average flow of 1820 m3/sec - just over 62,000 cfs in US units - the highest average flow for August over the...

    Churchill River Country - Saskatchewan

Yes, thanks for the videos. I was actually not that far away from you, as I paddled a route east of McLennan lake from September 10 - 17, 2018. I can confirm the inclement weather, one of the coldest and wettest Septembers I have experienced up there. My feet appreciated the rubber boots! -wjmc

    Churchill River Country - Saskatchewan

Yes, a very nice video. I paddled that six portages route some years ago, before the burns. Those historic canoe route pamphlets are gone from the Saskatchewan Government web site, but Ric Driediger of Churchill River Canoe Outfitters in Missinipe has preserved them on his web site...

    Seal River in Northern Manitoba

Great photos. I paddled the Seal long ago, and they bring back some memories. We too camped on the beach at the west end of Great Island, and caught grayling in the rapid just below. -wjmc

    What are you reading?

Just finished an interesting and well written collection of essays - "Canoe Trails and Shop Tales" by Hugh Stewart, long time paddler, guide, and wood canvas canoe builder. I highly recommend it. More information at http://www.mcgahernbooks.ca/mcspublishing/index.htm wjmc

Follow Will Steger on Garmin/Inreach link

He continues to make steady progress, is today camped just north of the esker on the east shore of Damant Lake, after being re-supplied yesterday (by Dave Olesen, bush pilot) on Jarvis Lake. No paddling yet, but it is warmer now and maybe he will see some short stretches of open rapids below...

East slope Canadian Rockies river trip advice?

You have received some very good input here, and on myccr as well. I might also suggest the Brazeau River, from above the Forestry Trunk Road to the reservoir as a potential option, and the Wildhay River from near Rock Lake as an alternate approach to the Athabasca. It has been some years...

    fly-in cost?

I have not used a pakboat myself, but have friends who use them and swear by them for simplifying northern logistics. Where I have been travelling lately, the financial benefit from a pakboat would be limited: I would be chartering the same aircraft, and simply avoiding the external load...

    fly-in cost?

Gee Larry, I didn't mean to ruin your day. I'm not going to try and tell you that flying up north is cheap. For example, the Beaver in Points North last summer was going at $11.00 per mile. That is steep. But it seems you are a solo traveler and could get by with a smaller aircraft if one...
