    Which PFD do you have?

I use an Astral Sea Wolf. Very nice, large clam shell pocket in the front. Quite comfortable, with a fleece lined hand warmer pocket behind the clam shell. The Sea Wolf no longer in Astral lineup, but it appears Astrals Ninja PFD is similar.

    Old Town Royalex 16’ Penobscot

I bought a new 16 Royalex Penobscot with aluminum gunnels which OT specs @59 lbs. I'm a larger guy at 235 and it was a fine tandem with my wife @ 135, but found I didn't like the performance with a 200 lb bow partner, seemed too small a canoe. I converted it to a solo and like it better as a...

What to use for an inside ground sheet (and how to use it)?

I have never used tyvek inside the tent, so I can’t answer your question. My use as a foot print was to have it take the abuse from ground contact rather than the tent floor.

What to use for an inside ground sheet (and how to use it)?

Tyvek is made in a light weight version that is used by kite makers. Type 1443R Tyvek. I've used it to make tent foot prints and vestibule ground covers...

    Photo of the day

Same blackwater creek I paddled yesterday and while there is fog around, it is not hanging low, dense, and mystical like New Years Day. I’m on a roll - I’ve now paddled every day this year.

    “Need” a new solo!

Yes, I considered that when I swapped out the aluminum thwart with the wood laminate. I could get a better finger grip on the thwart that way, but would give up looking at the colors on the beveled laminate face. I opted for the canoe looking pretty.

    “Need” a new solo!

This thread motivated me to make the effort to move the cam cleat. I took some left over thwart scraps, made a block and mounted it.. I’ll need to try it on the water, but it looks like it should work.

    Drip covers?

You could also consider making a partial front cover, which would cover just the area that collects drips from the paddle. This polygon would approximate a rectangle as it will be near the forward center of the canoe. You could test this concept with some 4 mil plastic and duct tape

    “Need” a new solo!

The line in the photo is 5/16”. The carbon cam cleat is a Harken model 365 which can accept line from 1/8” to 3/8”. Stronger cam cleats that accept larger line are also available from Harken. https://www.westmarine.com/harken-standard-365-carbo-cam-cleat-367211.html

    Drip covers?

Cooke gave me excellent directions for installing the nylon cover and drilling the holes. They even sold me a hand rivet gun modified for their snap closures.

    “Need” a new solo!

Since you're on an outfitting roll here is an idea to consider. Use a Harken cam cleat to restrain the painter closer to you, within reach of your sitting/kneeling position. This allows stepping out of the canoe while the hull is afloat and walking the canoe to the landing. The idea came to...

    Skid plate suggestions

No, bias cutting isn’t necesssary as the peel ply fabric stays intact regardless of the angle of the cut.

Royalex skid plate removal and reapplication

Good work, I would be inclined to take a coarse tooth steel rasp to remove and shape your excess epoxy, that will be quicker than hand sanding. I have applied 2 cloth layers in one epoxy session, but I had everything laid out ahead for layer 2 - fabric, pre-measured, yet unmixed, epoxy...

How to unjam a stuck double blade paddle?

I have unstuck double blades by placing one end of the paddle in the narrow gap between a pickup truck bed and the truck cab. Holding on to the other blade end with the ferrule button pressed in, turn the paddle until you begin get your shaft end to rotate. Rotating one of the shafts will...
