    Tumpline ?

Thanks Robin, I hope I still have it. I let myself go this past winter. I was eating crappy, gained weight and got lazy, at one point I was up to two naps a day. I've turned things around and got some strength back but still lack stamina. It is a real helpful tool PW, and I think it can help at...

    Tumpline ?

I think there is a potential possibility to hurt your neck and I have tweaked mine. That being said my wife has had a bad neck for longer than she's been using a tump. Her chiropractor won't even adjust it, and at one time she was scheduled for surgery. I've always been surprised it works for...

    Tumpline ?

My wife and I have been fans for almost 35 years. Using a tumpline spreads the load between your shoulders, head and your back. Leaning forward with the tump helps get the load over your center of gravity so it's not pulling back on your shoulders and it's not on your hips like with a waist...

    paddle sizing

I have come up with a couple formulas for paddle sizing that work pretty well. One is to measure from the tip of your middle finger down the back of your forearm to your funny bone. Multiply this by 3 for a bent shaft and add 6 inches for a straight shaft. Probably the quickest one is to...

    Rectangular kettle

This is not a recommendation, but FWIW, I used to stay at a campsite where a previous user, probably a moose hunter, used empty gallon gas cans to boil water I assume. With the can laying on it's side he cut open the big side panel, which is now the top, on three sides. Whatever he did with them...

Sorry to hear that Gerald. I wish you the best.

    The Maine Guide Paddle

I have not, but if yours is light, fine edged, and flexy like my two older S&Ws then I bet it's a great paddle. I have a Sawyer otter tail with a similar blade that I really like on big lakes. Good luck with the Northwoods, I don't see much downside in trying it out.

    The Maine Guide Paddle

I didn't realize they were the same paddle. The curiosity of how it paddled would be killing me. If you tried it and didn't like it, you could hang it back on the wall with no regrets. If you loved it, you might reconsider. I would think that a S&W commemorative paddle is made to the same...

NW CT Flatwater Day Trip 1, Sunday 8/31/25

I just ordered one, 12 degree with a Maine Guide blade and Northwoods grip. I hope you're not messin with me. I figured five hours to be about right. Any longer we'll have to take a nap.;)

    Article: "Freestyle kept me paddling"

Not so much when it comes to computer skills, for me anyway. Can someone tell me exactly what an URL is?;) More on topic, I had a point a ways back when I didn't loose interest in canoeing, I just lost opportunities to get out. I worked all summer right till freeze up and had little time and...

    Photo of the day

He was a fine specimen Jim. I was impressed with his hair, it looked better than mine ever did. I was going to post this photo to see who could identify what it was.

The efficiency of bent vs. straight shaft paddles

As I started reading this I was going to ask if they also wore Tilley hats, but you answered that. It reminded me of a guy on my lake who used a bent shaft and wore a Tilley hat. Before I had a chance to meet and speak with the guy I mistakenly thought he was one of my own, a canoeist. After...

NW CT Flatwater Day Trip 1, Sunday 8/31/25

Even though it’s a three hour drive for me I would have considered going if I was in town. One question I would have is how long could I expect the trip to take. This would give me an idea of what kind of pace I could expect and how much and what kind food and drink to bring. 9.5 miles is a...

    The Maine Guide Paddle

D J, how do you like using the Northwoods paddle, and what wood is it? I like your commemorative paddle above. It's a really nice gift but I wouldn't let that stop me from giving it a try on the water. I take a long paddle as my second paddle and mostly only use it to stand or if it's windy and...

Fresh paint to the 16’ Chestnut Cruiser

The boat looks fair and smooth, nice job on the paint. The kneeling thwart and gunnels look pro too.

    The Maine Guide Paddle

Thanks for posting those links Benson. I love Murat's' site and can spend a lot of time there. It isn't conclusive but I only saw one example of a paddle with a wide blade, as compared to the others from that time period. It was listed as a Wabanaki, probably Penobscot 74" with a wide blade...

A New Challenge: Cats in a Canoe?

I've had two cats out in a canoe. The first was around 1980, he went on an overnighter. The other is my current cat, he seemed to be a little nervous, but it wasn't traumatic for him. I think he would get used to it if I took him out more often.

    The Maine Guide Paddle

In the case of the Maine Guide Paddle my hunch is that the oversize blade is an adaptation by actual Maine Guides. I think the standard beaver tail and probably the Northwoods grip go way back historically. It would be interesting to know if there are any examples of it being used by Natives...

Lynx Lake Loop, Willow Ak. Daytrip

I made it back to complete the loop as an overnighter. It wasn't the bluebird weather like the week before and there were no amazing wildlife encounters or fish pics. The scenery is nice, but nothing dramatic. No big mountains in the background, no rocky out crops or beautiful campsites covered...
