    Defend your food barrel?

I just saw my first black bear of the season on Hwy 527 after leaving Armstrong ON on my way to Thunder Bay after a Wabakimi trip.

    Where Are All The Canoes?

I started attending Canoecopia every year in the early 1980’s and I worked at the show 4 or 5 times. The only years I wasn’t there was the Covid years when the show wasn’t held. I remember seeing the gradual transition from nearly all canoes to now mostly kayaks. I was also a charter...

Sorry to hear this, my condolences to his family. While working at Canoecopia I helped him and his staff set up his booth several times.

Anyone else cook with a Big Daddy skillet?

It was known as the monster skillet with my group. The final breakfast made in the monster skillet included all remaining food - we had some unique meals.

    Defend your food barrel?

In the 15 years (most years had 8 weeks of trips) of the Wabakimi Project, the 2-60L food barrels were always kept under the rain tarp where the cooking/eating was done. We never had any bear or animal problems. The garbage bag was also kept under the tarp. Sometimes Uncle Phil even cleaned fish...

What is your most DISLIKED tree and why?

Alders, not really a tree but I sawed thousands down clearing portages in the Wabakimi area over 12 years with the Wabakimi Project.

What is your favorite tree and why?

Very interesting thread, especially for the reasons why particular trees are liked.

What is your favorite tree and why?

Mine is the Tamarack in the fall - the last tree to retain its wonderful dull yellow foliage in an otherwise drab forest.

    A Beary time of year

I will be up there starting 2 wks from today. After about 14 yrs of trips in the area totaling 25-26 wks I have only seen 1 bear in the bush and it was across a bay and never detected us. Otherwise, the vast majority of wildlife spotted has been on Hwy 527 north from TB to Armstrong.

    Keels: Yeah or Nay?

The only time I found keels to be really useful was when I car topped 3 canoes with the bottom 2 being Grummans. The third canoe rested on top of the Grummans on 2x4’s notched to fit over the keels. This made for a secure rack. Too bad I probably way over stressed the transmission in my Dodge...

I remember visiting his shop long ago. Interesting place, interesting guy. I have wondered what became of all his stuff in the shop after he passed.

    Looking for a paddle

Go with Alan’s suggestion, get a paddle and start using it. You will add more paddles as you continue paddling, experience will help learn what you prefer. And eventually you’ll be like many of the rest of us, wondering why you have so many different paddles.

    Hood loop tie downs

I have used old sockets heated with a torch to melt holes in the straps which then keeps them from fraying.

    Photo of the day

Erk - Killarney PP is one of my favorite parks. I especially like the trip circumnavigating Prince Phillip Island. The area is very dramatic with the highly glaciated southern shoreline - unlike any other place I have seen on the Great Lakes. However, once a blow from the south comes up you can...

    Dreaded Cancer, Mark III

I will going on a Canadian trip with friends I have known for some time. All of us are retirees ranging in age from late 60’s to late 70’s. This trip has been setup by someone who is very organized. In a pre-trip questionnaire he asked us about existing medical conditions. When my wife saw the...

The Strange Things You See on the River

When we were kids we built simple little rafts and went out on Lake Michigan never considering that the lake is maybe 90-100 miles wide. At least these guys were smart enough to stay on a small river.

Electric Vehicle (EV) Tripping Data - 1st Trip, Real World Use

My SIL has a Tesla Y model (I think it is) and he takes out of town overnight trips and reports that other than a few waits he has always traveled successfully with charges available as needed. For me, I would be interested in electric but I still need a vehicle I can take into distant and...
