I liked when my son-in-law who is a pulmonologist/critical care doc would come along (he only came on trips where he felt the fishing would be good or he had the opportunity to go for species he wouldn’t normally be able to).
He had a good background after 12 years as a navy doctor with combat...
I picked up one of these recently, always wanted one but missed out the first time around. Works well for spreading peanut butter, my only use of it thus far.
Eight years ago on a Kopka Rv trip we encountered a Keewaydin group doing our route in reverse going upstream from Nipigon to Allenwater Bridge. The leaders told us the kid’s (12 -16 years old) families paid something like $4000.00 each for this 28 day trip. I would have loved to do a trip like...
Yes, I understand the notion that we not respond negatively to a new poster. But I am suspicious of offers to sell that seem too good to be true, especially from an unknown first time poster.
With that said, welcome to the board steveshan.
I have nothing like yours but I did have a nice pair from the Jameson distillery. Unfortunately, it has gone missing, probably lost in my overly large (for two elderly residents) house, like a number of other things.
But I do have some old quick-dry polypro underwear that I am still fond of...
I have been on 30+ weeks of NW Ontario (incl the greater Wabakimi area) and a few weeks on Manitoba trips and never had any bear problems with the food stored in barrels in the campsite under the tarp. We always keep a very clean camp and fish are cleaned well away from the campsite. In fact...
I remember Uncle Phil of the Wabakimi Project telling me he ordered his FD food directly from Mountain House in Oregon and had it shipped to Rydens (gas station, small duty free shop carrying tobacco and booze, tourist souvenirs and some outdoor gear) on Hwy 61 just south of the Canadian/US...
Recently got back from a 2 week trip to the southern end of Savant Lake ON. Upon crossing the border at Pigeon River we were questioned about how much food we were bringing in. The Canadian border agent was fine with our reply that we had 2 weeks of food with us.
As noted in Steve's post above, I enter the same way. As a near 78 yo, I am not that steady on one foot anymore so this method works well for me. And I really don't like launching from docks or elevated positions above the boat.
During a recent two week trip paddling bow in my buddy’s Wenonah MN2 I had my first experience with a double blade. I was using my straight single blade and he was using his double blade. I found the slight side-to-side rocking of the canoe he caused disconcerting and then just plain bothersome...
I just returned from two weeks among the numerous islands and peninsulas in the south end of Savant Lake ON. It was pretty much a sweat fest with highs in the 80’s and muggy air. This trip convinced me I am done with tripping in July and most of August. Maybe it’s my advancing age - I’ll be 78...
Grey Owl Paddles were used exclusively by the Wabakimi Project. I own a number of them myself. I have several carbon fiber paddles, but pretty much just use wooden paddles, which I prefer. Glad to hear this is just a change of ownership and not a closure.
When I was a kid my friends and I would camp out in our back yards with no tents, tarps or ground clothes. It was great fun and we always marveled at how our dew covered sleeping bags still seemed warm and comfortable. It wasn’t until I was in the scouts that I learned the true comfort of the...
A nephew of mine is a longtime conservation warden with the Wisconsin Dept of Natural Resources. He has told me they catch many offenders via citizen tips. Sometimes the offenders make their arrest and conviction very easy by posting photos/comments on social media.
Yes, this concern was shared with the truck owner who assured us he has planned out all recharging stops. The last one is in Ignace ON before we head north up Hwy 599. He was an engineer when he worked and has always been a very thorough trip planner. So I will leave the range anxiety concerns...
I would think you could check with some outfitters on this. Myself, I would just pickup a crown land permit.
Next month I will be participating in a Friends of Wabakimi sponsored trip during which we will be looking for evidence of caribou activity. FOW got a Canadian grant to do the field work...
