    Foot/ankle support when kneeling

I've seen a dry bag blown up empty and set between the legs as a way to keep pressure off the ankles. I tend to kneel for both control and tradition (though it is getting harder and harder as the years go), and have resorted to just setting my butt on a thwart to keep the pressure off. Yoga's...

I bought a new boat! ...What is it?

I snagged a fat little frog of a canoe off of craigslist last week. It was grossly misrepresented as an Adirondack Canoe Company 'Algonquin' model - the seller inherited with his barn and didn't care to dig too deeply into it - but after a few phone calls I've ruled that out. ACC does indeed...

    1910 Kennebec joins the fleet...

I was very, very close to buying that canoe when it went up on sale last summer. I couldn't swing it. I'm glad it went to a happy home.

    What Crooked Knife?

I've been wanting to make one of these for a decade now, and have never gotten around to it. There used to be a fascinating free PDF on mocotaugans available online from these guys - it was their book in its entirety - but I can't find it this evening. It's probably on there somewhere.

    A Legit ‘Expedition’ Hull Material

I'm not in any way combative or offended, and I hope I haven't put your back up! I'm happy to have a new perspective on it.

    A Legit ‘Expedition’ Hull Material

I will certainly bow to superior knowledge, but it's a hard theory to let go. Because I like an argument, I'll point out there's really only one example here of two equivalent boats being considerably different in toughness - your 40# IXP Phoenix vs 42# SRT - and that is hypothetical, not...

    A Legit ‘Expedition’ Hull Material

I talked back and forth with a well-known skin-on-frame builder maybe a decade ago and one of the things he said that stuck with me was - generally speaking, 30-pound boats are all about as tough as one another; same with 40-pound boats, and 50-pound boats. I've thought that way ever since, even...

Foam block pad for one-shoulder carries

I used my z-lite pad, folded up, for shoulder carries before I started building yokes. It's easily thicker than that, and it's got enough length to it that you can shift around under it to balance the canoe. I bring it anyway as a kneeling/sit/camp pad, so I'm not adding anything to my gear to...

    Camping with no tent, hammock

Long time tarp camper. Did close to 350 miles on the AT one time with just a hardware store tarp. 40s and raining most of that month so bugs weren't a problem. I bring a tent if I expect bugs (ie summer) but shoulder seasons a tarp is very nice. One thing that can increase comfort / warmth...

    Photo of the day

This was on a fishing day, not a canoeing day, but a nice picture nonetheless. Happy national fishing day!

Want to Buy - Leatherman Charge

Hello all, My Leatherman Charge TTi is on its last legs. This is a long shot, but I'm looking for a old-model Charge TTi, without the removable wirecutters they started adding in 2021. I know I'm in the minority but I hate the new cutter design. If anyone has an old one tucked in a drawer...

    Colden Dragonfly Repair

I have done an enormous amount of damage to my lungs in my work life, so I am apt to get passionate about lung protection. As always, your mileage may vary, but I sand in these masks. For involved repairs, or working with epoxy or serious sanding/fiberglass, I'd get a particle respirator with...

Indigenous teens to make first descent of entire undammed Klamath

It's good to see young people on the water, and great to see kids reclaiming their space outdoors.

    Colden Dragonfly Repair

Erica, I'll echo Gamma and implore you to invest in a good mask. Even little repairs and sanding can ding your lungs up badly, and if you have one, you're more likely to invest the time in more involved (or multiple) repairs.

    Two rescues in one day

I'm a sucker for turtles. Glad you helped those two out.

    Barbless hooks

Fishing barbless on a fly rod really improved my line handling, and fast. There are a few places I fish where it's a legal requirement, but after pinching a few barbs I do it out of habit now, and I don't regret the odd trout that slips off.

    Paddled a Wenonah Wilderness today

Ah, I should add I have size 15 feet with boots on them, which tends to confound even the most generous kneeling seat setup. The seat in the Wilderness was actually pretty neat, if very clanky, I had never seen it before. Ease of use at expense of tradition, which is always the way, I guess.

Didn't know there were two; it was a Wenonah.

    Paddled a Wenonah Wilderness today

I hopped over to Saranac for a day or two, even though I am incredibly poorly set up for summertime adventure at this moment in time. I forgot my sleeping hammock, don't have a flat paddle, and didn't even put a canoe on top of the car. Despite all that madness, I took the afternoon and rented...

    Free Whitewater Paddle

Hello all, I've got an Ainsworth C100 that needs a good home, I don't think I'll ever use it. It's either poly or plastic, 54"ish. I'm in central VT but will be in Saranac probably next week. It'd probably be too expensive to ship it somewhere, but if you're in range and want it I'm happy to...
