Thank you Jim, I should have thought to add a picture!

Are there any ALLY canoe suppliers in the USA?

Hello hive mind, I found a 1980's Bergan's 15-foot ALLY pack canoe on the side of the road for 40 bucks today. It's in way better than 40-dollar shape, but certainly not new; the one thing I would like to replace is the foam pad that sits between the aluminum rib assembly and the outer skin...

    Field sharpening

Fallkniven DC3 is my go-to. But frankly I've never been out long enough to mess an edge up that badly; I've done long stretches on the AT and NFCT where I didn't work my tools very hard, and short stretches where I just sharpen when I get back.

    Must have medical items?

Did you tell her you knew all about J-strokes? Indian strokes? Reverse sweeps? You can recognize a lot of strokes!

    Must have medical items?

You gotta vett those folks, too. We had a surgeon join us on an extended flyflishing trip who kept losing fish. He wasn't lying about hooking them (as some do), we actively watched him hook them and then have his line break, four or five times. Turns out he didn't know how to tie a surgeon's knot.

    Camping with no tent, hammock

I'm at about 4 for summer-weight hammock (sewn-in 40d bottom), top quilt and tarp, and I guess my tent is around 2.5. Tarp goes as a rule, regardless of which sleep system I take. When canoeing, generally the pack volume trumps the actual pack weight, so I've never taken everything all at once...

    Camping with no tent, hammock

I've used enough kinda-sorta UL shelters in my life, I'll wait for one that I don't have to futz with. Until then, I've got a nice tent. I'm glad you made it work, though.

    What are you reading?

I just spent a really pleasant hour talking to @sweeper at his place, after driving down to pick up some books he had offered up. He showed me around his workshop, pointed out some cool projects he'd got going, and we talked everything from butternut trees to Swift Prospectors. A heckuva nice...

    The Maine Guide Paddle

Huh. I've made a Maine Guide Paddle and didn't even know it. I once had a long internet argument about what exactly a "longbow arrow" was; my contention was that any arrow you shot out of a longbow was a longbow arrow, and the other guy's point was it had to be an exceptionally heavy, stiff...

    What are you reading?

@sweeper I'm roughly an hour and a half due north of you, I'll take it off your hands if you want. I just today ran into a topical canvas-restoring headscratcher. -Knees

"Tent Life in Siberia", George Kennan, 1870. Consistently delightful 100 pages in.

    Kevlar degradation question

Thanks to all, I will continue to mess with it and see how she handles in increasingly adverse conditions. I have a fondness for little canoes like that. Yes, there are dowels running from seats to gunwales, so replacing those with a solid wooden bracket would effectively make thwarts out of the...

    Kevlar degradation question

Hello all, I recently bought this little boat and, now that I've got new handholds and center thwart in it, I put it on the water in our little pond to see how it handles. The entire gunwale system shakes and twists fairly dramatically when I'm seated on one of the two seats. If I twist my hips...

Can you side sleep in a hammock?

There is a learning curve with hammocks but they can be enjoyable and offer great sleep and convenience. Plenty of good advice in this thread but I'll add my .02: Yes, you can side sleep in them, but in my experience it feels more like laying on a squishy couch, where you're not quite all the...

I bought a new boat! ...What is it?

https://www.canoetripping.net/threads/the-adirondak-rebuild-almost-done.81930/ Here's a fellow member with the same logo on his (much nicer) boat, so I think the Stowe-Allagash-Adirondack connection is solid.

I bought a new boat! ...What is it?

@Benson Gray HIN search reports that it's made by Scotts Custom Boats in Arizona...which seems to be a powerboat accessory company. Apparently several makers have used the SCS, and Scotts is the current holder. "Stowe Canoe and Snowshoe" here in Vermont, maker Bob Hartt, seems most likely at...

I bought a new boat! ...What is it?

^ SCS63462H888 I couldn't find SCS, but the 888 is a good bet for a date of manufacture, thank you. What site/resource are you using to find HINs?
