    A Raven for Christmas

I gave up with the upward swoop of bow strips. I tried narrower strips but they just kinked and twisted. I taped a few horizontal strips in to see how it was going to look It looked way to busy.I went with a wider strips with a narrow sliver of walnut in-between It is coming along as planned 👍...

First time builder Ashes Solo Trip

Don't get me wrong, I'm not advocating sloppiness, but sometimes it's hard to get things to cooperate and wood can have a mind of it's own. Stuff Happens. I am building my 2nd canoe now, and thought I would do some fancy strip pattern on the bow, and now I figured out I can't keep going with...

First time builder Ashes Solo Trip

Hello and welcome Bentpushrod. I used thickened epoxy on my gaps of my stemless build. I could've done better with the color match, but hey, If someone has to look that close to point it out it's time for them to leave. You can see the little darker spots where I filled gaps. There were two...

    A Raven for Christmas

Thanks Mem, I didn't think about using narrower strips. Excellent advice. Gee thanks Gamma, I'm the guinea pig on this one. Oh well some idiot has to try it first. I think I'll stay horizontal all the way to the stern. I might try some type of inlay pattern on the bottom. I'm going to have lots...

    What’s the world’s longest river?

I'll have to mark this on my calendar. I would love to see a video documentary of it.

I left the pads on. Better grip, less damages and keeps the tube from sliding off. I used them when I built my first canoe 3 years ago. Been in a box with the tubes since then. They help hold the strips in place while I staple the strips to the forms. A little extra squeeze goes a long way. I...

    Ballast Placement

So if Bogan is constipated, it might throw your equation off. I need a Bogan.

    A Raven for Christmas

Eew, lots of screws and staples, but it'll be ok. Maybe? Anyhow is this messed up idea I had with a strange flow of strips on the bow going to work? or is it just a Picasso brain fart I had. I'm afraid it's going to pop like a chubby girls girdle when I break it loose? It'll look cool 😎 if it...

    A Raven for Christmas

I wondered about that. I went back and re-read your post, after you mentioned it. I just screwed up and made them to thick. Just stupidity. I can easily recut my stems. Thanks for advice. Lining up my forms right now. I'm also waiting on my bandsaw blade so I can cut the taper on my stems...

    A Raven for Christmas

Setting up my forms. I have made an error when I made my inner stem. Stem thickness is 7/8" thick. Any ideas what I should do? Remake the stems? I sure do some stupid things sometimes. Roy

I think 45 pounds is great! I get a huge kick out of the picture of the canoe getting, launched, out of the up stairs shop. Great job and have a great trip. Roy

    A Raven for Christmas

Yes I did this time. I think it helped? That roll of fibered strapping tape was 6 bucks! Good grief. I'm sure I'll find other uses for the rest of it. I'll probably have to use the rest for redoing my stems. Roy

    A Raven for Christmas

I remember reading your post when you built yours. Yep maybe your fault Mem. I figured if you could do it, I could too. Ha Well it'll work out. I had my strips a little on the heavy side of 1/8 thick, maybe more like 3/16? My quality of wood selection probably could've been better. I just...

    A Raven for Christmas

Um no I didn't. It was strapping tape, but not fiber reinforced. That probably contributed to my failure. Hmm I guess I better get some. The store room at work doesn't stock the good strapping tape, bunch of cheap skates. I guess I'll have to spend my own money on that.

    A Raven for Christmas

You mean something like that? When finished a person would view the ends with horizontal lines across the stems. 🤔 Interesting. I know I had quiet a bit of spring back when stems were left unclamped for a few minutes. I went and clamped them back up figuring maybe the needed longer curing time.
