    Old Alabama paddler says hello.

Welcome. I'll look forward to seeing where you wind up. I've been focused North due to limited vacation time but retirement isn't too far away (I hope) and I'll spend winters to the South at that point.

"Rina Sen: Mastering the Rapids, Shaping the Future of Indian Canoe Slalom"

Welcome. Others would know better than I but I can't remember another CT member from your neck of the woods. Congrats on a highly successful career so far and I hope you find continued success. I also hope you stick around as your geographic area is unique as is the perspective of an...

    A Raven from Scratch

Stopped by the shop after horses and took a few pics. I add this for anyone considering wood gunwales but finds fitting them intimidating: I use 2 piece gunwales because the thought of getting the compound angle correct in the first try would scare the bejesus outta me. For 16 foot(ish)...

    Foot/ankle support when kneeling

I kneel in rapids or sketchy open water crossings (it facilitates prayer) but I don't (and can't) put the top of my foot flat against the hull. I'm kneeling with toes down & bent slightly. In that position, I do not need to sit back against anything other than my lower legs so ejection should...

    A Raven from Scratch

It's a bit nerve-wracking for me too but I keep cutting until it turns out OK. I'll try to get a couple of close-up pictures of "oops" areas that I had to play with. (horses after work tonight so it'll probably be Thursday before I get back to the shop) I usually tell people that you don't...

Reminder re November 2026 Fund Drive

Hi Pikachu! it's been a minute since we've had a spammer hack his way in. @Glenn MacGrady 's on vacation til Thurs but he'll probably blast you back to the nethersphere at that time (If @Alan Gage doesn't get you 1st). In the meantime, I guess you could make your case for retention. Glenn...

    Saving Another RX Penobscot 16

That's what I use to lift them between the trusses of the carport. 1 per canoe seems fine so I'd say that you've got room for expanding the fleet. Mohawk solves the paddle problem for now but I'd recommend DIYing a wooden paddle (or 2) this winter. (nothin' like "I made it" IMO)

    Removing duct tape residue

I'd try acetone. If for no other reason than it dries residue free. If you don't want anything that harsh / flammable, I've heard that Goo-be-gone works also.

    A Raven from Scratch

Time to wrap this up (I've done a little better at working on it than I've done at reporting progress) I don't recall if I waited a couple of days or not (I think I got distracted so it's likely) but I got 3 coats of spar varnish in the inside and then tackled the seat installation. I wanted...

    Canoe Weight Calculator

@sophiamark, welcome to the forum. One alternative to canvas would be dacron (ceconite). Weigh savings are reportedly substantial. https://www.canoetripping.net/threads/video-tom-mackenzie-builds-rib-plank-ceconite-canoe.128845/

    Getting in and Getting out

Welcome. I tend to use a hybrid of some of the above and, as mentioned, you should experiment to see what works best for you. I certainly agree that motion helps stabilize the hull when launching but I wouldn't use a paddle across the gunwales because it can slide pretty easily. I enter...

    Gunwale options in California

Welcome. Looks like a great boat for the money. Are you looking for plastic / aluminum replacements or would you consider installing wood gunwales? (Not a bad DIY project IMO and that would look sharp with Cherry)

    Poll: Wood Strip Material Choice

So far, I've built with Aspen, Tamarac & White Pine... I'm currently planning builds with Catalpa and Cypress. (trim woods are usually chosen for color contrast rather than any other consideration) I'll eventually build with Northern White Cedar due to its lower weight but, for now, I like...

When do you use float bags?

I don't own a float bag although I do build (relatively small) float chambers into my canoes.

    Paddling in an Apocalypse

I'll disagree with that. Laws do not make one a better human and I'd bet that the vast majority of people do not even need laws. Even those that would misbehave if not for the "law" are not following the rules because someone told them that they must; they follow them because the punishment...

    That nasty cracked Wenonah Moccasin

While the epoxy is still green (a day or two... maybe three after application) a sharp scraper can clean those loose threads right up (if you're at all concerned about it or just want to experiment)

Poll: Would you rather do group meals or cook your own?

We regularly packed c-rations on Scout trips. Scoutmaster & Assistant both smoked so the cigarettes were dutifully collected.

Great find & a nice looking ride.

Poll: Would you rather do group meals or cook your own?

With the exception of an overnight with my son, my tripping has, thus far, been solo. I don't foresee that changing anytime soon but, if it did, we can share fish or a fire but bring what you want to eat and I'll do the same. Part of the simplicity of solo tripping is that you never have to...

    Paddling in an Apocalypse

Actually... I currently have at my disposal a '51 Chevy Pickup and a '79 CJ5. The CJ was built with electronic ignition but I can swap a points distributor into it in 20 minutes, the Chevy won't be affected at all (OK, maybe the radio won't work but how would I know... all the stations would...
