First stripper build: Prospector-16 Help & comments appreciated

If it were me I'd cut those knots out of the strips (cut strips on either side of the knots) and then butt joint the strips on the forms as needed.

    Knots

My favorite demonstration of the hitch is shown in this video.

    Knots

Yes!!!! This is what I use for securing the fixed end of a ridge line! You can put the line as high as you can (e.g. toss it or work the line up the trunk) and then tie the hitch low; it cinches up to the top just by pulling the standing end. Leave a long tag end and it releases with a simple...

Poll: What do you sleep on mostly when canoe camping?

Exped Megamat Lite, wide, and now coupled with an Exped Chair Kit, which I use to make it into a lounge chair for reading in the tent and a slightly raised back for sleeping (I hate sleeping totally flat on my back).

    Kokatat Launch Socks Review

I'm back from a seven day, six night lazy man's (guided) trip on the Allagash from Johnson Pond to Round Pond, which I will write up later. But I wanted to post a review of some new-to-me gear: Kokatat Launch Socks. https://kokatat.com/hydrus-3l-launch-socks-acuhls These are essentially the...

No advice is better than bad advice

Just run the cut aluminum gunnel through your industrial extruder to bring it back to full length.

    What are you reading?

"Tall Trees, Tough Men (A Vivid, Anectdotal History of Logging and Log-Driving in New England)" by Robert Pike. Very entertaining and informative.

    Dreamboat Rebuild Rebuild

I've long suspected you are operating a chop shop and trafficking in hot canoes out of that so-called workshop of yours. How else to explain the endless parade of canoes passing through it, often leaving with their hulls repainted different colors and customized to the point where the true...

RIP J-Stroke: ACA No Longer Teaches the J-Stroke (EDIT: Or Does It?)

Seems I've stirred up a hornets' nest. I did not know the love of the J-stroke ran so deep.

Some folks are sensitive to cedar dust. Suggest you wear a mask. Sorry to get political. ;)

RIP J-Stroke: ACA No Longer Teaches the J-Stroke (EDIT: Or Does It?)

This class (sponsored by my local canoe club) was three hours long. I ended up being the only student.

Care to elaborate? I really don't know a thing about them.

    Richmond, VA river accidents

Sounds like the two tubers were sharing one tube. They would have little or no chance of steering to shore in that kind of flow and probably didn't see the dam until it was way too late. I'm guessing the paddleboarders in the group were not experienced, either. Sad. Surprised this was not...

RIP J-Stroke: ACA No Longer Teaches the J-Stroke (EDIT: Or Does It?)

Yes, you are describing exactly what this guy was showing me. He insisted that the extra lift (before the pry) is how ACA wants its certified instructors to teach it. I don't get it either.
