    Kite +6%

I've been thinking about the double layer thing quite a bit lately. My first Osprey, which saw several thousand kilometres of tripping over the course of a decade was built with one single six ounce layer of regular fiberglass, inside and out. It saw some very rough usage, had some bad dumps...

So what exactly is everyone up to in their non-boating hours?

I was a bike guy in my 20's, racing and touring. When Cannondale came out with the oversize tube aluminium bike, I took part of my student loan and bought one. It was pretty advanced for the time, now it sits in my son's garage, probably worth almost nothing. My interests have always bordered...

    Kite +6%

A 6 percent increase should bring you close to 16 feet I'm guessing. I'm wondering how close your canoe will be to the Shearwater, the bigger sister of the Osprey.

Callan: Adventure Is Being Planned Out Of Existence

I don't mind providing detailed maps to people who come up here. Our geographical location keeps the traffic low, and anyone willing to come all this way deserves to have a basic map. As I age and the ticker gets more hardware, I am hopeful that other people will adopt some of these routes and...

Callan: Adventure Is Being Planned Out Of Existence

Let's not be so quick to rush to judgement about whiners and lame threads. Callan's article does more than register grief at not being able to book campsites in provincial parks. It is also leaning toward blaming the social media-ization of wilderness canoe tripping, which is ironic, since...

Callan: Adventure Is Being Planned Out Of Existence

I feel for you guys, I really do. I couldn't live in an urban cancerous sore of a city, I get the heebeegeebees in Thunder Bay. I can drive for 15 minutes and not see another human for months.

    Photo of the day

My son got married at our place over the weekend. Brought out the canoe I made for my wedding and Honeymoon and put it to use.

The efficiency of bent vs. straight shaft paddles

The Journey seems heavy, mine comes in at 13 ounces, lol, not that 2 ounces is anything in a big outfit. I don't like the grip on the journey, but after 20 minutes or so I stop noticing it. I have paddles that I like more, that feel better in my hands, and in the water, but the weight gets me...

The efficiency of bent vs. straight shaft paddles

I would say weight and paddle length are the two main differences, and not so much straight vs bent. My straight shaft carbon paddle has spoiled me, and I now rarely use my wooden ones.

What happens when you paddle a bent shaft backwards?

Lol, great test Alan! I did the same one yesterday with my straight shaft. I was really surprised that it felt the same on both sides!

The efficiency of bent vs. straight shaft paddles

Lol, I'm wondering if you are being intentionally provocative Glenn. Hull shape and construction certainly does matter. For instance, I will challenge any good recreational switch hitter to an all day race, as long as they paddle a standard pelican poly monstrosity while I single side an...

    Dreaded Cancer, Mark III

Very sorry to hear that Gerald!

    Hello people

I think you'll notice quite a difference between the Caribou and the Kite. The Caribou is a big, generous hull. The Kite, which is a slightly modified version of the Osprey, will seem a fair bit smaller, even though I would classify it as a good size solo. I started out in an Osprey, put many...

The efficiency of bent vs. straight shaft paddles

When I was bicycle racing, I had cleated bike shoes that locked onto the peddles. I also had spandex shorts and shaved my legs. All of this was of course because in all fields, racers are always at the cutting edge of what equipment, techniques and body mechanics make them go the fastest. When...

A New Challenge: Cats in a Canoe?

There was a fella on Myccr about 20 years ago, think his name was Richard Culpepper, apparently a lawyer in Thunder Bay. Anyway, he was a very serious canoeist, and he also took his cat on most trips. If my memory is right, he posted a picture of himself and his cat in a Chestnut Pal, running a...

My trip to Canada in a Cyber truck

Glad it worked out! Not to be that guy, but is there a trip report, lol.

The efficiency of bent vs. straight shaft paddles

In 30 years of taking high school kids on trips, I have experienced a particular situation several times. The well to do parents want to outfit their kids with top notch gear, so a trip to the canoe store was in order. I'm not sure who the salesperson was, but the kids invariably ended up with...

Welcome to my forties: skin-on-frame canoes

Just wondering, is an all cedar build a no-no, would it make everything to squirrely?

Welcome to my forties: skin-on-frame canoes

Resurrected this thread so I don't derail the other one. Found this video, that looks like a pretty good tripper to me, 15' 1" long, 29 " inches across.

What are your current solo canoes and how do you like them?

I'm thinking I might like to try one of these, although I have no idea how to start. Could you use an existing set of stripper forms to create the frame?
