    Matches improved!

I was raised on the great old Eddy matches also. Use to light them with one hand holding them tight and flaring them with a prick of the thumbnail. Long time no see. Canadian Tire brand Red Bird were once sold in double packs of either the "strike anywhere" type or the "strike on box type"...

What is the ideal canoe dog for a solo canoeist?

As I stated in my first post, I dry land train all my dogs at home way before we hit the water. IMHO the only safe large dog in a canoe is the one lying still in the bottom of the boat. Dog does not leave his position in the canoe once grounded until told to do so. Found this out early in life...

What is the ideal canoe dog for a solo canoeist?

The Pudelpointer photo was from the 1970's. The dog was bred by a friend of mine now deceased. Bodo Winterhelt. Was no fun on portages as she would quarter all the way and then go on point on grouse. I then had to put the canoe and/or packs down and put her on lead. She was a great grouse and...

What is the ideal canoe dog for a solo canoeist?

I think you would want a medium size dog with a good under coat for warmth and some internal fortitude. Very little prey drive (so it has very little interest in the wild animals) but a decent amount of defence drive (guarding) and lots of pack drive (wants to be close to his master). The dog...

    Elasticity

If you decide to go the way of the suspenders, then get heavy-duty ones such as firemen's or logger's and expect to pay more than for regular chain store suspenders. I have never had problems with quality suspenders using the clip grips. G.

Putting a Quebec trip together; anyone have links to water temps?

Manicouagan is about at the same latitude as Lac Mistassini and above Lac St. Jean. Here are the annual water temperature variations for Lac St. Jean. I would not be surprised if the reservoir is much colder, as its mean depth is 85 meters and Lac St Jean's mean depth is 11 meters. That been...

    Winter of Rehab

Here's wishing you a full recovery. If it's a lower body issue, then winter may be long. If it's upper body, then get the snowshoes out and enjoy if you live in the snow belt. I think the worst issues for canoeists are shoulder injuries, as they don't seem to remedy as well as other areas of...

    Abandoned Canoes?

Odyssey said: The top photo was taken at a Canadian Government hydrology station, a place where some trippers end their journey and are picked up by aircraft. Leaving their canoes behind and having gone through most of their food, they were able to fly back to civilization in a smaller less...

    Preferred tripping style ?

I must admit that I also have been looking at alternate ways to the blue barrel. They don't take up space efficiently in the canoe and are uncomfy to carry. As I get older, there is less flesh on the bones to buffer that hard plastic when portaging. G.

    Abandoned Canoes?

Anyone who has been down the Thelon in the early 2000's must remember these sore sightings.

    Preferred tripping style ?

Arctic trips with others (2 to 3 canoes for sharing the expense reasons), a couple of 30 day trips with a tandem canoe, mostly with the wife. Other than that always solo or on occasion 2 solo canoes and the great company of Robin and a while back with Ted. I also loved the solo canoe get...

    Argosy for sale Québec

Thanks YC. It is, but of course there are many very slight sand scrapes. I'm looking for something a little bigger, as I sometimes include a large dog in my trips. Hope all is well with you and yours. G.
