What is your local day paddle?

Lately my local day paddle has been Cox Hollow Lake in Governor Dodge Stare Park near my home. I have been canoe training my nearly 8 month old pup named Max. He is a Hanoverian Scent Hound. He is also training with me on wounded deer recovery and therapy dog work. Day paddling has been a...

Solo Composite Canoe that can do it all 😉

Ravenwolf, Here are the last of the pics that may be of assistance as well … I forgot to add them above. I hope this gives you a much better idea of what you are looking for without being able to see one in person. Good luck to you.

Solo Composite Canoe that can do it all 😉

Couple more pics of the canoe … hope this helps you to “ see “ what it is like in this configuration. Bob.

Solo Composite Canoe that can do it all 😉

Ravenwolf, My Eaglet has a lowered seat with backrest ( crazy creek ), kayak foot braces and currently has one seat only. It was purchased as a tandem and reconfigured to be a large solo for myself and my dog. Set up this way it paddles very well … I still have less power and balance than...

Solo Composite Canoe that can do it all 😉

I have an Eaglet, and find it excellent as it is narrower and symmetrical, both traits that speak to me. I love mine, even in ultra light layup it is robustly built from the waterline down. I did not mention it as it is under 17 feet. Still, as a solo it remains nimble and holds a lot of...

Solo Composite Canoe that can do it all 😉

Like Al mentioned, tandems paddled solo is the way I travel in the back country. My first suggestion would be to second the NorthStar Polaris canoe. Next on my list would be the Nova Craft Cronje, read the review from Darren Bush, he explains it nicely. Very nimble, light and fast. 17 feet...

Double blade paddle . . . worth it?

Ok … at the risk of espousing blasphemy here goes … I am a die hard single blade j-stroke, guide stroke canoeist. That said, due to some physical limitations of the youth leaving my knees, I can no longer kneel. This has left me a much less powerful paddler. I now require foot braces and a...

What height boots do you prefer?

Glenn, I prefer tall boots for both ( but I am old school ). I like boots like Bean uninsulated guide boot ... with eye hooks, not regular laces - WAY faster on and off. I wear them for canoeing, portaging mucky, rocky trails ... wadding out to enter my canoe in a boulder garden etc. For...

    Waxed canvas tarp/wool blanket

Snapper, Well … I do not think I am much help to you and apologize. The link below is for Tentsmiths co. I purchased my oilskin drop cloth from them a lifetime ago. Seems there have been some changes since. My ground cloth is 7x7, with 2 seams and no loops sewn in. It is a terrific ground...

    Winter footwear preferences?

SilentWilderness, In my uninsulated, walking around, sneaking in the timber boots, I use a wool footbed similar to those in the link below. They keep my boots light, stop the cold from frozen ground creeping into my feet when I am stationary but I can still feel rocks and twigs so quiet...

    Waxed canvas tarp/wool blanket

Snapper, I will look to see if I can find any info and maybe some pics of my ground cloth that I use to waterproof my bed roll and as a floor in my tarp tent.

    Waxed canvas tarp/wool blanket

I use a bed roll, Egyptian cotton water proofed with a wool blanket or two inside. I got dirt from all over the US and Canada in them fibers. Canoe and hunting trips have seen the most use for my bed roll. I tump it over my chest like the old way people, or put it on a pack or wanigan to port...

    Winter footwear preferences?

In my neck of the woods, hilly, steep and when temps drop well below zero I am a huge mukluk fan. When temps are darn cold to 20 degrees, and snow can be wet or have slush under it, I like my Kenetrek Northern pack boots. If mid 20's and up, I use my 17 inch severely old and worn bean boots...

    LOTN trip! Weeeeeee!

Cold Feet - A little over a month before your trip. I am envious of you. Looking forward to pics and a trip report of your adventure. It is just starting to get colder here ... the canvas tent and wood stove are feeling pretty nice now. Good luck preparing! Bob.

Of Autumn And Canoe - Trip Video

Nice video to watch this morning. I have been hot tenting it this deer season - loving it. Watching this video made me lonesome for hot tenting with a canoe. Great way to start my day.

    High Riding Pup

Been there!! I keep a 20 liter bag rolled up and tied to my bow thwart now ... for this exact situation. When needed, I simply fill bag and place in bow. It works great and there is one less thing for me think about.
