    Poll: Wood Strip Material Choice

So far, I've built with Aspen, Tamarac & White Pine... I'm currently planning builds with Catalpa and Cypress. (trim woods are usually chosen for color contrast rather than any other consideration) I'll eventually build with Northern White Cedar due to its lower weight but, for now, I like...

When do you use float bags?

I don't own a float bag although I do build (relatively small) float chambers into my canoes.

    Paddling in an Apocalypse

I'll disagree with that. Laws do not make one a better human and I'd bet that the vast majority of people do not even need laws. Even those that would misbehave if not for the "law" are not following the rules because someone told them that they must; they follow them because the punishment...

    That nasty cracked Wenonah Moccasin

While the epoxy is still green (a day or two... maybe three after application) a sharp scraper can clean those loose threads right up (if you're at all concerned about it or just want to experiment)

Would you rather do group meals or cook your own?

We regularly packed c-rations on Scout trips. Scoutmaster & Assistant both smoked so the cigarettes were dutifully collected.

    1910 Kennebec joins the fleet...

Great find & a nice looking ride.

Would you rather do group meals or cook your own?

With the exception of an overnight with my son, my tripping has, thus far, been solo. I don't foresee that changing anytime soon but, if it did, we can share fish or a fire but bring what you want to eat and I'll do the same. Part of the simplicity of solo tripping is that you never have to...

    Paddling in an Apocalypse

Actually... I currently have at my disposal a '51 Chevy Pickup and a '79 CJ5. The CJ was built with electronic ignition but I can swap a points distributor into it in 20 minutes, the Chevy won't be affected at all (OK, maybe the radio won't work but how would I know... all the stations would...

    What Crooked Knife?

Missed this thread (before my time) but, having used a hoof knife most of my life, I can definitely see where it would be useful for carving. Are they like hoof knives that they are sharpened on the top edge only & the bottom remains flat to the work?

How is this for camp food

Looks (and sounds) like a feast (or two) for sure. Definitely one for a non-portage trip. :)

Repair of RedBird Cedar Strip Canoe

Most people won't even notice and those that do are probably so fussy that they would be annoying friends. Carry on.

    Cheap stove alternative.

I've done a lot of cooking on these type of stoves and have always put the stove directly on the bottle. They are certainly affected by wind but you can usually find a rock or log to block the majority of it (I doubt I'll ever carry an actual windscreen- I tend to lose things & don't want to...

Repair of RedBird Cedar Strip Canoe

I'd say the safe bet is to sand off the varnish, and sanding through the glass closest to the repair site will probably help you feather the repair to be least noticeable. (think: old bare wood against new bare wood and layers of glass / varnish gradually becoming thicker until you're past the...

    Getting Kids into Canoeing

He was not wrong. I got interested thru the Boy Scouts and learned a lot during my years as an lifeguard / aquatics instructor. The local Scout council also maintained (I think two) trailers full of aluminum canoes that the troops could borrow (maybe rent- I wasn't interested in specifics at...

If you could take one boat on a Western road trip...

I may still be doing a similar (but shorter duration) cross-country trip this Sept and, at this point, I'll be taking my Freedom Solo stripper because I am familiar with it, it has proven very reliable on the past two trips and (because I built it and can build another) it's probably more...

Show us pictures of your canoe vehicle with boat(s)

Canoe looks great up there! New truck is about the same color as the old IIRC.

Gel Coat or Epoxy for Repair?

Looks like a solid repair to me... nothin' wrong with any of it. One note on the interior texture: Northstar might have gone light on filling the weave to give better traction. I think most stripper builders only do a wet-out coat on the inside for that reason and avoid fill coats completely...

    Peterborough Minetta

Nice find. An interesting hull for sure and it looks like it's in nice shape.

    Solo Canoe Search Beginning

I'm not sure how pressing the desire for a new boat is but, if you can set the money aside for (almost) a year, the WPASCR is a 10 hour drive (traditionally the 1st full weekend in June but it moved this year). Lots of solos there that you can test paddle and many of them are for sale. Sorry I...

Flash flood video from Center Point Texas

Growing up as I did in SW PA, a trip to Johnstown and the flood museums there were inevitable. Looking at the old photos, I've never been sure which to be more amazed by: the amount of devastation that the city endured or the fact that so many buildings actually survived the 60 foot high, 40...
