Defaced another boat - Adding lining holes

oof... that looks like it requires a little higher level of precision that what I'm used to (I'm a "meh, good enough" kinda guy). I guess I could try a smaller pipe & gouge out the hole when I fail. (I'll pm a few questions to minimize thread drift)

    2025 Canadian Wildfires

The fires have certainly impacted canoe tripping and will, probably, continue to do so. I've been researching routes for the bucket list and @Marten tells me that WCPP and the surrounding area has been devastated (not to mention that his plans got cancelled this year). I suppose it might be...

Defaced another boat - Adding lining holes

Cool, Thanks Tony. Now the only question that remains is: Drill holes in the new Raven before I officially paddle it or actually scratch the hull on a rock before I drill holes in it? (overall stress level in my life has been receding lately... maybe some self-inflicted stress is OK)

New food limits for personal use when entering Canada

That's the one that caught my eye too. Kinda like packing freeze-dried walleye isn't it? Now, hickory syrup... I could (maybe) see that as it would be harder to find locally- tough to get here unless you DIY. (I'm still not portaging 20L of it though)

    Hello from.the netherlands

 Sacrilege! (just kidding. Your, umm, feet would get cold sitting in the ice anyway. Never did see the point in ice baths... tried once... NOPE))

Defaced another boat - Adding lining holes

I like the flexible tubing idea! Can you share the materials list and the actual process for the vandalism? (I can see me drilling a few holes in perfectly good boats myself) Edit: nevermind on the materials list, I found it in this thread. I am still wondering if you epoxy the tube into...

    Hello from.the netherlands

Welcome. Always nice to see pics from other parts of the world. I know some people that portage beer coolers but never seen one paddled before. With the lid open like that, doesn't the ice melt faster (or do you prefer warm beers)?

Repairing a Royalex canoe- Advice and Repair

Yesterday's post was a new guy. mweekes reopened an old thread and says at the beginning that he bought this boat. Probably should have started a new thread that (maybe) referred back to the old (whose OP hasn't been around since the last post above) but that might be tough for a forum newbie...

Repairing a Royalex canoe- Advice and Repair

Yee-Haw, looks like you found some gnarly water! Are the 2nd & 3rd pictures both of the stem that was damaged (4th & 7th pics)? Unless the hull is soft around the damaged area in the 1st & 6th pics, I don't think I'd worry too much about them & I certainly wouldn't worry about the scratches in...

    Hello from Oregon

Welcome & sorry that I missed your intro over the weekend. Great pic too... I always like seeing the PNW & the snowy ridges in the background.

    Hello from Vermont

Welcome. Glad to have you along & happy that you decided to do more than lurk. Can't help much with route suggestions up there but I'll certainly look forward to pictures & trip reports if you got 'em.

    Big Island Lake Wilderness access

I haven't been there but it's under the authority of the Hiawatha Nat'l Forest, Munising Ranger District Office. They can be reached here. Welcome to the site and, if you would, report what you find so future searchers can benefit. (Trip Reports are also welcome as my tripping is shaping up...

    Hood strap failure

Although I don't do it, I've often thought this was a good idea. A rubber bungee does have the advantage of automatically (and immediately) taking up slack should the canoe loosen by shifting and I've found that I can usually get a little tighter when I first check a mile or so from home. A...

    Hood strap failure

I'll agree with that. Prior to joining this site, as I was just starting to plan, I drove to New York state (I think Buffalo area but I'm not sure. I know I crossed the Erie Canal) to pick up the tandem Sawyer that I would eventually take on my trip to the BWCA. I wrapped the cross bars of the...

New To Canoe, But Not To Paddling

I can understand the feeling that you might cringe when thinking of scratching up a stripper that you've built (many people like keeping nice things nice) but don't think that they can't be used hard. I practically dragged mine the length of the Steel River on it's maiden voyage, dropped it...

Bent vs. straight paddle - direct comparison plus bonus footage

Speed & efficiency comparisons are worthy of discussion but, for me, there's simply no comparison between a wooden straight shaft and anything made of plastic / carbon. I love the thought that I am seeing places the way that they were first seen, whether that is walking, riding a good horse or...

Thoughts on double bladed paddles from a somewhat experienced double blader.

IMO, you can never go too far wrong with a beavertail.

Comparing speed and efficiency of single vs. double blade paddle

Makes sense. The inside of the boat would remain much too dry using same-side correction strokes. :) Seriously, a great effort to eliminate variables. If I'm ever in a hurry to get where I'm going, I might sit & switch (but probably not), my days of flailing away with kayak paddles are...

    What are you reading?

Where do I apply? Wait... better to respond as a private message... too many here are more qualified so I want to slip in under the radar. :D

I'm not crazy, I can feel it.

and here I thought it was caused by other people, too many bills and my inability to win the Powerball. Truthfully, the bones that I've broken have always ached more when rain is imminent. Now that I'm developing arthritis in my right ankle (broke that twice), I often feel it coming an hour...
