Late, slow and unprepared paddling companions – A rant

Hmmm, can you say solo? I have never had a problem when I go alone. Well, rarely do I have problems.

    Humidity and the Stripper

Huh, interesting read. And short enough for me to stay focused. Thanks

    Double layer bottoms

Looking at the inside of my canoe last night got me thinking about this issue. Perhaps fortunately for me, there is an overabundance of resin inside upon my football due to my spreading challenges during construction. On one hand it bothers me that it is relatively thick, on the other there is...

    My first stripper in progress

Thank you all for your kind words. Last night I flipped her over and set the accessories inside as a teaser. I have a bum shoulder, and I can't just lift my canoes into portaging position. There is something "going on" inside the joint, maybe just bursitis or whatever, but there comes a...

    My first stripper in progress

"Stripperguy: I went back and reread the entire thread a few minutes ago...I didn't see what you did (planned to do?) for the seat. Is there a seat? Or are you a kneeler? Or are you waiting to paddle it before locating the paddling position? There is benefit to seeing how the boat trims out on...

Coats of varnish? I'm at that point with three applied and it looks pretty good. Also, how soon after the last coat can I get her wet?

    Portaging with Paddles.

The BDBs are good but I found them a little lacking in tenacity. Thus I crafted my own, larger units, for a lot less cost and more flexibility. Like hauling small racks of lumber. They also go inside my canoe a paddle straps etc and on the outside of my packs for loose items.

    Nice Old Town find yesterday

Found this today in my canoe file. Maybe you can use it as a sales flier. Interesting that the natural finish was more expensive than the painted versions. Also the term reinforced plastic rather than the common fiberglass. Mac

Mid West Mountaineering's Spring Expo Apr. 22-24

Thanks again for the meet up Jim and Alan. Nice to connect a face with the discussions. A few nice boats on display but nothing like the ones on this board. Kind Regards, Mac

    PFD For Dogs?

Sadie has yet to be bored in the BWCA as she is almost always on alert, unless it is late on a lazy warm day and the pack is just too comfortable. Once in camp she will get her "fly-bys" out of her system then find a spot to curl up and call her own. That is of course unless it is bed time...

    My first stripper in progress

Jim and Alan, I too, had a great day and enjoyed meeting up at the auction and sharing ideas. No, not much sharing as I was the student! My wife Kim and I could not have had a better "date" including catching up with you, two friends from my Noatak adventure last year, watching my cousin Ted...

    Nice Old Town find yesterday

Looks great Robin, as my Trapper did before I applied the red tinted ironsides varnish. How much is your finished weight? I noticed that your canoe has no keel. The original model came with one. Did you remove it? I left mine on as it still had its integrity. Enjoy

    PFD For Dogs?

No Title For several years I have taken my 11 pound (12 when wet) toy Australian Shepherd Sadie (too) upon solo canoe adventures around home and in the BWCA. She really enjoys going "camping" and can hardly wait to get her pfd on and go along as the bow rider. Historically I have used a tandem...

Mid West Mountaineering's Spring Expo Apr. 22-24

Fantastic, I'll get to thank Alan for his insights as well. Ted's first program is at 9:15. And I'm interested in the 10:30 Ontario opportunity. How about I meander over to the auction site at about 11:30?

Mid West Mountaineering's Spring Expo Apr. 22-24

My wife and I are stopping by on Saturday and I'd enjoy personally thanking you for all the help you have given me. We need to watch my cousin Ted Olson present his first program about Grand Canyon hiking and will be semi free after that. Are you bringing a canoe up?

    My first stripper in progress

No Title Another excellent Saturday in the shop. Dad was out to inspect my gunwale and gave it the nod. It installed fairly well with limited challenges. Yesterday I picked up my spar varnish, gloss for the outside and satin for the inside, and with luck I'll have more time this weekend to...

    My first stripper in progress

No Title Had a great time last weekend working on the gunwales. Dad gave me a hand and then we had a fine chat about Ospreys as he five years ago had built an Osprey stand near a four acre pond adjacent to his property. No Osprey yet but there has been a red tailed hawk hanging around...
