Algonquin central lakes 8 days July Aug 2013

Yeah, I reserved all the lakes for that trip. BTW Apparently they only book about 60% of the sites on any given lake to make room for windbound folks, etc... Next week I'm going to algonquin again, but I probably won't book ahead as it is a weekday trip in the fall. Saves the reservation fee.

I'm just learning this stuff, too. I don't have a scanner, but I recently got an iPad and got some applications on sale recently from the App Store. I took a screen shot of the map section I needed. (On an iPad, by simultaneously pressing the contol button and the on-off switch). The resulting...

Algonquin central lakes 8 days July Aug 2013

Thanks for the high praise. I absolutely agree about the maps...am disappointed when reports don't have them. BTW a fellow traveller referred me to some excellent overlooked campsites (hidden gems). Out of respect, I altered the location of some of the campsites I used, to prevent overuse...

Algonquin central lakes 8 days July Aug 2013

If you mean protection from mice, chipmunks, etc. I get it. But if you mean protection from bears, I was under the impression that barrels are not bear-proof. Maybe I'm misinformed? I saw a lot of people using them in Algonquin, so I don't doubt their utility as storage. In the 90's my...

Thanks for looking. I always double carry. I take my time, build in extra travel days for windbound situations, dawdle, etc. Usually on the water around 7:45 or 8 a.m. and setting up camp in the early afternoon, between 2 and 4 p.m. Generally five or so hours a day. Part of me says, "Do...

Algonquin central lakes 8 days July Aug 2013

I already posted this report on Algonquin Adventures website, but I thought it wouldn't hurt to link to it here, for anyone who is curious about that area. I've been getting into canoeing recently, slowly getting acquainted with Algonquin Park to start, with a plan to travel further afield...

    My solo food pack

I do the same thing: one bag for breakfast and snacks, another for dinners. I put them in odourproof ziplocs in two Ursacks, that in turn go in a light pack that I wear on my front when portaging. Good system! ;) For a short trip, just one Ursack. I like the colour-coding of your system. I'm...

    New Tripping Vehicle Outfitting

Well that was fun. Love the thinking process and the step by step photos. Brought back memories of a small Nissan truck I drove in the nineties. BTW I'm envious of your boat collection!

Canoe Poling up the Big East River again (Pic Heavy& a Video)

Yes, thank you for that. Great editing. And no "epic" soundtrack. Wonderful. A solid demonstration of skills. Thanks also for the link to that book. It is clearly written and presented.

    Close encounter with a Loon

Awesome pics! Reminds me of a time some 15 years ago, in Quetico, my buddy was fishing while I paddled. He got a bite, reeled it in. I could see the spoon coming near with a small fish on the end...Suddenly a white and black blur appeared following the fish toward the boat.Fish and lure came...

    A weekend in Algonquin

Check out hammockforums dot net under the section for outings. There you click on Southeast and you will find some folks in Louisiana who get together for group "hangs" so you can try out all kinds of different hammocks. Cheers.

    A weekend in Algonquin

Glad you enjoyed the pics! re: falling in. The falling in was not a huge deal. As a soloist, I'm supercautious--ditch kit fanny pack, lifejacket on at all times in and even loading the canoe, loading with an onshore wind if possible so if i dump i blow back to shore, etc. In this case, a...

    A weekend in Algonquin

Thanks...Yeah, I was surprised the first time I went canoeing in the park last year. Most of the Access lakes along Highway 60, like Smoke, Canoe, Cache, Rock, and Opeongo have cottages that I guess were grandfathered into the park, along with a surprising number of children's camps. The...

    A weekend in Algonquin

Spent last weekend canoeing into Tom Thomson and Burnt Island Lakes. It's a highly travelled area. Makes a nice two-night three-day excursion from Toronto. Some pics here: http://neelands.smugmug.com/Other/Tom-Thomson-Burnt-Island-canoe/29786952_kdZB5d

    Noob question....

From your link on the previous page, you're in tampa, right? I just typed into craigslist there and entered 'canoe' under the boats for sale. I get that you have a limited budget. The wenonah sundowner at $675 sounds like a good deal depending on condition...thy are $1500 new. Proven...

Food dehydrating: The secret to packing light, small, & eating better in the bush.

Thank you, Pinemartyn, for starting this thread. This will be the year I finally start dehydrating instead of wasting money on freeze dried meals at MEC etc. Your tips are useful and inspiring. BTW, though I haven't done any dehydrating yet, I know that this fellow's meal ideas are highly...

    Kitchener-Waterloo Canoe Symposium April 13, 2013

found a link to the Wabakimi Whitesand and Kopka etc management plan. If you want to say something, speak now or hold your peace...Mr. Cotton said written letters probably get more attention than those submitted electronically, but something is better than nothing...there is a link to submit...

    Kitchener-Waterloo Canoe Symposium April 13, 2013

Had a good time yesterday at the Kitchener-Waterloo Canoe Symposium. Like last year's event, it was a good day...enlightening, friendly, low key, fun, not too overwhelming. As mentioned above, there was a great presentation by Phil Cotton on Ten Years of the Wabakimi Project, which makes me...
