What are your current solo canoes and how do you like them?

A couple of years ago I traded a Wenonah Wilderness in Rx and some cash for a Wilderness in the ultralite layup. Nothing to write home about, but it gets the job done and is easy to get on and off the water. Plus, I like the adjustable seat, which a lot of people don't; even if it is noisy I...

How is your winter so far?

Several nights in a row where it hasn't gotten below freezing here in the Upper Connecticut Valley. And rain. Blah.

Of beavers, wolves, and forested wetlands.

Native day lilies? Do tell. I get major brownie points from the wife when I find flowering plants the deer don't eat. My research says there are no native days though.

    Canoe cover for travel?

I have covers for both canoes, but only because I store outside. I take them off before transporting the canoes anywhere.

    Happy National………Day

What I find fascinating about Schrodinger's Cat is that you will always find it in the box. Because it's a cat. And there's a box.

What Do You Do In Winter ?

Mostly alpine ski. Helps to have ski hills nearby. Some nordic as well.

    Litter, garbage and trash

Here on the Connecticut you'll see swaths of the riverbank stabilized with old tires. Illegal now, but a thing back in the day. So we, too, see a lot of tires in the river and yes, it does feel like they naturally reproduce.

Poll: How Many Canoes and Kayaks Have you Owned?

Seven I think. Three currently, which is all I have space for. Solo canoe, tandem canoe, and a recreational kayak.

    Winter Storage Question

I store my boats outside under Red Leaf designs covers on sawhorses about 8' apart. The boats are 16'. I'm out in the back yard fetching wood daily, so I see them regularly and just brush them off if I think too much snow is accumulating.

Show us pictures of your canoe vehicle with boat(s)

Interesting tie-downs in those first two pics. Not sure I'd trust'em.

    Snow, where you are?

We had a flurry a few days back, but not enough to make me note the date.

Wooly Bear Caterpillar Predicts Winter (?)

There is an entire festival built around this in NC. It was last weekend. From their facebook page: There are 13 body segments in a Woolly Worm and 13 weeks in the winter season. Each body segment of the winning Woolly Worm corresponds to that week’s weather. Weeks 1-4 - Below Average and...

Where Does the Colorado River Start and End

National Geographic's Pete McBride has a few short films about the Colorado River. Chasing Water is a source-to-sea effort if I remember right, then there's two about the Grand Canyon (Martin's Boat and Into the Canyon), and one, maybe the most compelling, about the river actually making it to...

Inukshuks, Cairns or Rock Piles: What to Do or Not Do?

I don't see many cairns except the ones above tree line in the Whites where they are very helpful while trying to find your way down in iffy weather. They are literally life savers. They are large and unkempt, and obviously trail cairns. Were I to see small "ego cairns" (I just made that up)...
