    New to me Chestnut Chum

The stem band is definitely not original. When I pinch the stem if feels firm, so I'm optimistic but I suppose one never knows until the canvas is off.

    New to me Chestnut Chum

Just picked up a Chestnut Chum that is all original and in really great shape. It has minor damage to two planks and otherwise all wood is in perfect condition and no rot. In fact, only two ribs tips are split. What appears to be the original varnish covers the inside and the ash gunwales. It...

    Duluth style packs

Top flap is same size as on the Duluth #3. For the photo, I didn't fold it in a way that shows it's full size.

    Duluth style packs

Yup. I may make another style with defined sides but without all the straps and handles and loops you see on so many other packs, both nylon and canvas. I like simple packs.

    Duluth style packs

OK, finally got around to making a #3. I used 15 ounce cotton duck canvas (the same as Duluth), stainless steel roller buckles, copper rivets and high quality 8-9 ounce latigo leather. Oh, yeah, and size 138 nylon thread. All seams are fully hemmed, which is an upgrade over Duluth and Frost...

    Esquif Echo

I wouldn't recommend it for Class III and neither would Esquif. I haven't tried the other boats you mention so don't have any insights to share. As for weight, I'm sharing my impression and I tend towards hyperbole. Overall, I really like the Echo and think of it as a very capable canoe -- just...

Advice on buying canoe with flaking paint

Does this canoe require a full re-canvas or is it just in need of good sanding and a paint job? It's for sale near me and I'm interested only if I am refilling canvas and painting. Also, if the paint is this bad, is it likely the bedding in the stems is bad, too?

    Duluth style packs

I have her North Woods pack. Love the size. She makes really nice packs but would never want to copy her work out of respect for the business that she has built.

    Duluth style packs

Thanks, Robin. Among other things, I'm a canvas and leather worker. I've priced out materials and am confident that I could produce a high quality version of this in either 15oz or 18oz canvas, latigo leather and stainless steel roller buckles for a much more reasonable price. Going to make a...

Robin, could I bother you to lay your #3 flat and measure height and width? Thanks, Art

    Seliga for sale

I admit I have an untrained eye, but the stem in one of the photos looks rotted and several planks look damaged.

    Repair kit for canvas canoe

Just purchased a 1965ish Chestnut Prospector from White Rose Canoe in Newbury, Mass. Great people to deal with. But it's got me wondering what I should carry in my repair kit when tripping with this canoe. What would a well stocked field repair kit for a wood/canvas canoe include? Sorry if this...

    Maine canoe community is awesome

On Friday, I exercised the poorest of judgment by trying to run my Esquif Echo down the St. George River (Maine) in flood stage. By the third wave in the wave train my canoe was full of water and, well, I went swimming for about a 1/4 mile of rapids before I could get to shore. I was exhausted...
