    Duluth style packs

Jim…… Looks to me like a really sun & rain bleached Monarch model of a Duluth Pack from back a few different ownerships ago. They were made with 18 oz canvas with some other details, which I can’t remember (extra stitches?Double bottom?). That’s what my 1968 one is, but mine has faded to a...

    Duluth style packs

“The Maine Woods Pack” thanks to Hank D. Thoreau for the inspiration or “Art D-eluxe Pack Company”. I am starting to skim coinage from my retirement account to my must have one of those packs. My now discontinued Duluth Pack Company, Northwoods Pack (their version of the Woods Pack) is...

"Loving Monsters" — a book review and short essay-rant

tketcham…… Lynx are good, nice white meat, you just don’t need Jimmy sitting across from you, as you take that first tentative bite. Jimmy of course let out a big MEOW. I have eaten it many times since. ……BB

Does anyone teach a one-on-one birch bark canoe course?

I knew two guys that built a birch bark canoe with only the book THE BARK AND SKIN BOATS OF NORTH AMERICA as a guide. I couldn’t find my copy this morning, I would guess there are plenty of them in used book stores. Minnesota Public Television has a documentary about some white guy teaching...

New Rhode Island Law Makes Wearing PFD Mandatory for All

Just dumb not to wear one. Worse case scenario, make it easier to recover the body.

Northwest Passage 2000 mile kayak attempt

Stan Rogers died June 2, 1983, while helping other passengers get off an Air Canada aircraft that made an emergency landing in Greater Cincinnati Airport in northern Kentucky because of a on board fire. First heard him on the PBS radio show the FOLK SAMPLER many years ago singing his FIELDS...

Northwest Passage 2000 mile kayak attempt

Not my cup of Lapsang Souchong. I did like the fact that they used NORTHWEST PASSAGE song lyrics, “through a land and so wild and savage….”. A really good song by a great singer song writer, Stan Rogers. Seems they tried this once before and had to scratch. At least with modern communication...

    New to me Chestnut Chum

Pretty sure that # 3 pack sack is going to look just great sitting amidship in that canoe. Thanks for showing us & looking forward to more insight into your adventures.

    Poirier’s (Duluth) # 1 pack size

The envelope packs would only list a height & width. Packs with a depth measurement are box packs, which are a different critter, and according many old time woodsmen are inferior as packs. The added depth pulling out and down on the packer. My # 2 pack measured a finished size of 24 X 24...

    Poirier’s (Duluth) # 1 pack size

Thanks Mark Z, very much appreciated. Calvin Rutstrum should be put up for Sainthood. As the packsacks went up in number they increased by two inches in each direction. I noticed that my #2 seemed really small compared to the #3. I would have never guessed that it would only be as little as two...

    Poirier’s (Duluth) # 1 pack size

Glenn…… Interesting thing about the chest strap on Poirier’s pack sack. Most modern back packs, even some day packs have the equivalent sternum strap to keep the pack straps from slipping out of place. I also read somewhere about helping with load distribution or something like that. My memory...

    Poirier’s (Duluth) # 1 pack size

I believe that the Frost River Packs are much better than the current Duluth Pack Company’s product. If I were buying a new pack today it would most likely a Frost River brand or if I wanted grace, beauty & durability, I would go with a Jane Barron crafted, Alder Stream Canvas pack.

    Poirier’s (Duluth) # 1 pack size

Haven’t seen the umbrella attachment that was part of the original patent either. For that matter haven’t seen many umbrellas outside of bigger cities. I once met a man from the British Isles that had dual purpose walking staff/umbrella well off the beaten track on the Seward Peninsula...

    Poirier’s (Duluth) # 1 pack size

Thanks Administrator MacGrady….. I spent the greater part of Sunday looking for a link too. Spent a hour this morning looking through boxes of old books that I have stored away. I did however make headway on sorting out the chaff from the grain. I have four photocopy paper boxes full of books I...

    Poirier’s (Duluth) # 1 pack size

Anyone have the dimensions of the original # 1 size of Camille Poirier’s pack sack (Duluth & Frost River’s original inventor). I have a book, someplace that lists them all, but in my dotage I can’t remember title or where it might be. I have the original sized #3 & #2 but am thinking that the...

My new (old) canvas wall tent.

I found the tent that I was looking at. It is a Savotta Naiger SF100. Weight 5kg Width & length 220x295cm Center height 190cm with wall height 70cm So, roughly the size of a 8x10x6 wall tent with a two foot wall at about 11 lbs. scandinavianoutdoors.com The downer part is they will not ship...

Christopher Chapman's 'Quetico' featuring Bill Mason

Was nice to see Bill Mason in his youth. I enjoyed reading his books. Glad to see he was using the internal pack flaps on his Woods Packs in the proper way, tied to each other tightly under the main flap, light & tight. I did think that his axe could have had better placement for portaging, but...

My new (old) canvas wall tent.

I have seen a made of modern material wall tent on one of the European outdoor/camping supply stores on the internet, don’t remember which one though. I believe it was in Finland, maybe called a scout or scouting tent. If anyone runs across a site that has them please post it. Even a light wall...

Plus 1 on large bandanna, not a snot rag sized one. 36 X 36inches (915 x 915 or larger, to be of many more uses, like the military’s shemagh or the Buckaroo’s Wild Rag. I got a Big arse Hanky from someplace on the www. Works great soaked down with bug dope for keeping Deet off my tender hide. I...
