Satellite Communicator (Garmin In Reach Mini II) questions.

My group used an InReach to have a paddling partner evacuated from the bush in Wabakimi last week due to cardiac issues. We won’t go on trips in the future without one.

    Canoes and guns...

A bit off topic but my son-in-law when in the navy stationed in Guam fished with a friend who was a native of the island. The local always carried a .22 pistol to dispatch either sailfish or swordfish before bringing them into the boat (I don’t remember which fish it was), because they were too...

Tips To Deal With The Great Tick Invasion

I remember reading an article that stated something to the effect that if an area had a healthy fox population that controlled the rodent population, there tended to be less Lyme disease in humans.

    Hey from Western PA!

I just came back from Canada last week - no special requirements to enter, just the usual questions about money, guns, purpose of visit, for how long and where. Over the years I have found it seems to help when you mention you will be using an outfitter, renting something, in other words...

    Single Trip Carry Portage Techniques

Single carry portaging seems like young man’s game. I never did it and couldn’t do it now because I am too old and depend on what many would consider comfort luxuries.

We•no.nah retired 15' 6" Solitude (Retired) For Sale

Value - seems to be in good shape for a 25 yo canoe. So I would guess $8-900.

How I came to buy my canoe

How it all started… Got out of the navy in 1970 with a couple of $grand in my pocket. So I bought a used VW Microbus and a new Sears aluminum 17’ canoe because my sister worked there and I used her employee 15% discount. I would have preferred a Grumman but the 17’ Standard was $210 and the...

    Hey from Western PA!

Sounds like you tired of the BWCA just like me. For the past 17 years I have paddled mostly in Canada. I tired of the crowds, campsite competition, rules, etc, etc. So welcome to the forum and maybe get acquainted with Gamma1214 who has expanded his trips into Canada - “the great white north...

    Defend your food barrel?

I just saw my first black bear of the season on Hwy 527 after leaving Armstrong ON on my way to Thunder Bay after a Wabakimi trip.

    Where Are All The Canoes?

I started attending Canoecopia every year in the early 1980’s and I worked at the show 4 or 5 times. The only years I wasn’t there was the Covid years when the show wasn’t held. I remember seeing the gradual transition from nearly all canoes to now mostly kayaks. I was also a charter...

    RIP Dan Cooke

Sorry to hear this, my condolences to his family. While working at Canoecopia I helped him and his staff set up his booth several times.

Anyone else cook with a Big Daddy skillet?

It was known as the monster skillet with my group. The final breakfast made in the monster skillet included all remaining food - we had some unique meals.

    Defend your food barrel?

In the 15 years (most years had 8 weeks of trips) of the Wabakimi Project, the 2-60L food barrels were always kept under the rain tarp where the cooking/eating was done. We never had any bear or animal problems. The garbage bag was also kept under the tarp. Sometimes Uncle Phil even cleaned fish...

What is your most DISLIKED tree and why?

Alders, not really a tree but I sawed thousands down clearing portages in the Wabakimi area over 12 years with the Wabakimi Project.

What is your favorite tree and why?

Very interesting thread, especially for the reasons why particular trees are liked.

What is your favorite tree and why?

Mine is the Tamarack in the fall - the last tree to retain its wonderful dull yellow foliage in an otherwise drab forest.

    A Beary time of year

I will be up there starting 2 wks from today. After about 14 yrs of trips in the area totaling 25-26 wks I have only seen 1 bear in the bush and it was across a bay and never detected us. Otherwise, the vast majority of wildlife spotted has been on Hwy 527 north from TB to Armstrong.

    Keels: Yeah or Nay?

The only time I found keels to be really useful was when I car topped 3 canoes with the bottom 2 being Grummans. The third canoe rested on top of the Grummans on 2x4’s notched to fit over the keels. This made for a secure rack. Too bad I probably way over stressed the transmission in my Dodge...
