When do you use float bags?

It's all about displacement, a 100 litre dry bag filled with gear will displace the same amount of water as a 100 litre air bag. Unless your gear bag is filled with sand or concrete there will be plenty of air to provide basic flotation.

Would you rather do group meals or cook your own?

Roughly speaking...... 50% of my extended trips are solo, nothing is easier than cooking for a group of one, other than the odd "fancy" breakfast it's meal in a bag with an occasional "real" meal on a layover day or the rare time when I catch my entree. 50% of my extended trips are a group of...

When do you use float bags?

I only use them when day paddling Class III. When I'm tripping my boats are pretty full and the gear takes the place of float bags. I occasionally consider putting small float bags in the ends but I've never actually done that. My in field experience shows that with the gear secure the boat...

    Missinaibi River

Canadian Customs don't care what you leave with, US Customs might care what you picked up in Canada that you didn't have when you left the US.

Not gone away just switched to Print On Demand, nobody wants to stock all 22,000 1:50 topos in pre-printed form. Even just the popular ones would be several thousand.

    Missinaibi River

A dramatic rise in flow and level on the 23rd. The storm that passed through on the 22nd did a lot of damage and keep the rescue folks very busy. Parts of Algonquin were closed, many back and front country campers trapped, a few serious injuries from falling trees. I wasn't following that storm...

    hogged fiberglass canoe

If you have the space it's always good to have a beater boat on the rack. There are times when such a thing is perfect.

I would use CalTopo where you can easily print out map sections at any scale and size that you want. You can add waypoints and other info before you print. https://caltopo.com If you want full size copies of the old Canada Topo's the government no longer prints them but there are third-party...

    Triple Carry Portage techniques

I'm late to this party but I have come up with a solution to the TCPM issue.......... I utilize the QCPM system (Quintuple Carry Portage Method), 4 loads of gear and one for the boat. Used in conjunction with highly selective route choosing and flexible scheduling makes an effective method of...

Hudson's Bay Company shuts down after 355 years

Canadian Tire (Crappy Tire as I call it) is another retailer WAY past it's prime, I'd rank it only slightly higher than Wally World. When I was a kid (60+ years ago) it was a cool place to visit. Back then it was more of a catalogue store, you went up to a counter, leafed through the catalogue...

Hudson's Bay Company shuts down after 355 years

The "real" death of Hudson's Bay came in 2006 when it was taken over by Jerry Zucker. Unfortunately (maybe) Zucker died two years later and since then it bounced around with various hedge fund types and made stupid moves like taking over Saks 5th Ave. It hadn't really been much a store since the...

    Invasive species carried on canoes?

Yes it happens, usually not because of canoes but it is definitely possible. In the Great Lakes the major issue is zebra mussels. It's very easy to transport zebra mussels into the lakes north of Superior...

Can anyone figure out what kind of canoe I just bought?

I really doubt it's Royalex, RX boats rarely if ever come with flotation chambers. The "4X" in the serial number is confusing, it's not one of the more common codes and may have been used for more than one model. A close up image of the scrape along the keel line would help identify the...

Megiscane Misery & The Clash: Trip Report spring 2025

Yes yes and yes but here is the main problem.......... I like to paddle with people at least 20 years younger than I am, these people tend to have jobs, families and other assorted obligations with much less flexibility than an old guy (not excessively old yet) who has been semi-retired since...
