Megiscane Misery & The Clash: Trip Report spring 2025

Christian beat me (again) to posting the report, I do plan to go back to the original thread and make some comments. I've done a few previous early Spring trips where small amount of ice and snow in the bush was encountered but nothing of the same magnitude as on this trip.

La Vérendrye: Canada’s Largest Canoe Camping Reserve

Up until the takeover by SEPAQ the canoe aspects of La Verendrye were operated by FQCK (https://canot-kayak.qc.ca/) an organization dedicated to paddling throughout Quebec. They were great to work with as opposed to SEPAQ which is really only interested in front country camping and the...

Leaving for the still "frozen" North, Riviere Megiscane

Back at home just in time for an enjoyable ice event.....that would be my Leafs beating Florida Panthers and extending the series to a game 7 on Sunday. Interesting reading the comments here, speculations were mostly accurate and in spite of the failure it provided some new to me paddling...

Leaving for the still "frozen" North, Riviere Megiscane

Two week trip on the Megiscane in the "near north" of Quebec, we (it's a group of 3 solo's) may have to dodge some icebergs as it's been a very late Spring this year. It's a mix of river and lake travel, a scattering of rapids. We will access the put-in via the train from Senneterre and they...

    Permits for Missainabi River

Well one good thing for you. For decades the Canadian train departed Toronto in the evening and would drop you at Peterbell around 2:00am, not very nice as there isn't much of anything in the way of camping there except the ditch beside the tracks which is a terrible place to sleep given the...

    Permits for Missainabi River

You are booked on the wrong train! You will get dumped off at Peterbell and miss Missinabie Lake, The height of land portage, shorten your trip by 5 or 6 days and lose the ability to say you paddled the entire river. You should be booked on the Sudbury to White River train (route #185) if you...

Kevin Callan: Should parks require mandatory education courses for permits?

Not sure if it's still true as I avoid Provincial Parks like the plague, when you register for your back country permits at an Ontario Park you are given a trash bag, the bag has a list of basic do's and don't printed on it. Regardless if users read it or not, the slobs just laugh and go on...

Kevin Callan: Should parks require mandatory education courses for permits?

it's 2025, it's really too late to change the ways of most Gen X or Millennials (WAY too late for boomers that are slobs).

POLL: How do you pronounce portage?

In a similar vein, when talking or writing are you consistent in your use of measurement terms (yards/metres etc). Visitors to Canada from the US are "required" to use metric measurements, some do, some don't. Personally I have been around since way before metric became a thing here (1970). I...

    Sealine dry portage bag question

The person or persons responsible for the colour selection at MEC need to be replaced, they are obviously colour blind! The quality of the gear is mostly very good but the colours......yuck! This applies to virtually all the MEC branded gear (and much of the clothing).

    Shipping of Yakima round bars

Just to add, virtually all carriers have added significant extra charges for oversize items over the past year or two. This has hit sellers of golf clubs, fishing rods and similar items really hard, in some cases it has doubled shipping costs. Relevant to people here would be the cost to ship...

POLL: How do you pronounce portage?

Around here a serviette is paper and a napkin is cloth as in "I can't afford to eat there, it's a cloth napkin joint" (in the food service trade "fine dining). When you pull a section of Paper Towel off the roll, if you fold it and place on the table it becomes a serviette.

Seeking historical examples of women's canoe expeditions

Mina Hubbard in 905 is a classic story. Mina traveled with her male guide but she was in charge. This was a follow up to the ill fated Hubbard-Wallace expedition in 1903 in which her husband Leonidas died. https://www.heritage.nf.ca/articles/exploration/hubbard-expedition-labrador.php...

POLL: How do you pronounce portage?

Only Americans use ˈpȯr-tij (at least every (US) east coaster I've every paddled with) We (Canadians) do not sit on a stoop, it's a porch or veranda. We do relax on a chesterfield not a couch or sofa (but that usage is fading away). More stuff to learn before you visit Canada Eh...
