    Cooking Fish

The Boy Scouts, taught me to cook egg and bacon, in a paper sack ( Lunch size bag ). Place the bacon in the bottom of the bag ( two strips ) and then the egg. Roll up the top of the bag, and poke a green stick into the fold, and suspend, over coals, not flame. So long as the paper was coated...

    New Bottom Application

If using a roller, I'd suggest the "cigar" type foam rollers, a 4" would be just fine. Be sure it is rated for varnish. Then tip it with a quality "Jen" foam brush.

    Leaving firewood at camp

In the BWCA, we always leave some fire wood, at the fire grate, as your pic shows. It's a courtesy thing. I believe the no trace applies to non designated campsites. There are plenty of slouches out there, and that is too bad !

    Drawknife sharpening

That is nifty. I made and used a more crude but effective, jig to sharpen planer knives. This is far superior ! Thanks for posting. I have a few draw knives to sharpen. Jim

    Pre-Packing, Bad Idea

I'm guilty of TOO much gear too ! The only time it really bothers me, is Portaging ! Da ! Oh Food ! I really need to cut back ! A guy shouldn't gain weight, paddling all day and portaging ! I keep wanting to pack a hammock, to lounge in at camp, a pair of small binos, and way too many...

    First canoe build

I had no troubles with skin reaction. but yes, Cedar can be detrimental to your lungs !!! I picked up a full face mask, that I will try the next time cutting strips. There is one out there that has an air pump and fastens to your waist. Definitely worth it if you plan to cut a lot of cedar !

    Seat height for tripping canoes.

I have always tried to hang my seats low. To me if they were too low ? All I needed, was to add a seat cushion. A Simple solution, to raise the seat.. If however, my seats were too high ? It required a lot more work to lower. Having said that, stability, is my first concern. Comfort, a close...

Fairing or beveling the mold stations of a strip build Kite canoe?

That is totally agreeable ! It is however more work, but certainly worth the while of a builder ! I too use staples. There are those that don't. When I staple ? The stapler is held in the horizontal position, Your method, would allow either horizontal, or vertical stapler position. Jim

Fairing or beveling the mold stations of a strip build Kite canoe?

OK ! Here is the spacings and an illustration, of how I stretched my original Pearl, these were actual spacings, so don't take the numbers for a different design. I cut new stem forms, to make things Fair, for the stretch. You could measure from the faces of the center form ( 0 ), but using...

Old school vs. new school canoe design.

Manufacturing, a straight sided hull, is much easier, than a tumblehomed hull. Wenonah saw little reason, to stray away from the Jensen designs. As they have proven over the years.

Fairing or beveling the mold stations of a strip build Kite canoe?

I SLIGHTLY bevel the edges, of the forms, where the strip contacts the form. This eliminates an unsightly dent on the inside, that requires extra sanding on the inside of the hull. Extra layers of tape, on the forms, will help also. You don't need to remove much. You certainly don't want to...

DIY composite canoe with foam core

Looks great Alan ! I like the lines . Did you get a chance to get it wet ? If not, at least you have the stripper to test ! I would have liked to get up and see it ! With the flooding and road closures, it wasn't in the cards ! I'll try and get up again soon. Jim

    Single Trip Carry Portage Techniques

My method for caring my paddles on a portage. The bent blades wedge. This works, but a bungee cord strap at the thwart and handle works better. Place the thwart about 26" fore, of the seat.

DIY composite canoe with foam core

It really sucks, running out of resin ! I didn't have enough resin to help you out. I found that when I glassed one side at a time ? There was a dry line, running down the keel. One side wetted out, the other side dry. I had no problems, at that seem, when I came back 6 hrs later to wet the...

    A little canoe maintenance

Looks good. If you store the canoe outside ? Keep it covered. Wood gunnels, won't last if you let them get wet, for any length of time ! I use Watco, and give my gunnels a heavy coat. Here is a trick, I use, to make it easy, and no masking. Make a set of tall X- saw horses. Set the canoe upside...

    bad glassing job

If the glassing was done recently, (within a year ? ) Patches will blend in. Me ? I'd patch. adding a layer would add significant weight, without much benefit. I prefer to scrape first, then sand. The patches may look ugly, but after you sand, and varnish ? You won't see them.
