    Sit-on-top CANOEs

I wish I did. I was young enough then I thought I would remember all this. I know we came in on a side river that joined with the Hudson and we pulled out at a nice park. I know we went past the Blue Ledges, but only because I was told that. The water was moving much too fast for me to pay...

Who’s still paddling a Royalex solo boat

I have an old RX MR Explorer. One thing I like about it is there is plenty of room in the bow. The Mohawk fiberglass tandem has barely enough bow space to squeeze into. I also have a 13 ft Mohawk solo that is quite useful. I'd say it's the boat I use most often. I've also a 15 foot Mohawk...

    Sit-on-top CANOEs

The fun starts at about 39 seconds. Falling over in the Ardeche My impression is that I do not want to ride in one of those plastic bumper cars. I can't imagine having any control over the boat. I don't know if there is any difference in the boats, but some paddlers are using single blade...

    Sit-on-top CANOEs

I'm planning a trip to Europe this spring and wanted to paddle some of the rivers there with rented equipment. I can't bring everything on a plane, least of all a canoe. The latest thing in canoe rentals (besides kayaks, of course) are sit-on-top canoes. They seem to be made of some...

    Pants with knee pads

This thread is about two years late for me. I used inline skating knee pads strapped on the outside and lost them, during my trip on the Cree. I will definitely be getting some of these pants here, or I might just sew pockets onto my current pants. Thanks!

    How Bad Is My Paddling?

The goon stroke is easier on the wrists if one has or has the tendency to get arthritis. Due to a poorly healed break, I've never been able to do an effective J-stroke paddling on the left. For the left, I've always used a goon stroke. And now that my wrists are both impaired with arthritis, I...

    Ballast for Wind, Current

When I was paddling a fiberglass Mohawk tandem in the backwaters of the Everglades, I found the wind really battered me around. I filled a couple of gallon jugs with water and that seemed to take care of it.

Fond Du Lac River, Saskatchewan (and rivers like it)

In September the weather could well turn cold, overcast and rainy. Just something to think about.

Kevin Callan: Death of the Campfire

When tripping I rarely have a fire unless it is needed for warmth or to dry things out. I cook on a Trangia, but when solo I’ll also eat some meals cold. I bring a twig stove for back up. All that said, I hope campfires aren’t totally banned, for all the good reasons already mentioned.

    Lights for Tripping

Agreed. On my last trip, 3 weeks, I had a Zoleo and was expected to check in daily, an iphone which I used for photos, but it is needed for the routine Zoleo use, the headlamp, 2 battery bricks and a solar charger, Big Blue, which worked great. As did the Luci light. Next trip, emergency only...

    Lights for Tripping

For a long trip I have a Luci light which is what I use almost exclusively. I have an ultralight head lamp should more focused light be needed, but I almost never use it. It has rechargeable batteries and I carry a couple charging bricks on a 3 week trips for all the electronics. I am very...

    The nature of speed.

When I was paddling the 15 ft tandem Mohawk backwards, it was easier to paddle heeled over than flat.

    Hurricanes

I keep my head down and eyes closed until a hurricane warning is issued. Then I put up the plywood shutters, hunker down and pray.

    Wind threshold

I had a battle with the wind two summers ago on Cree Lake. Knuckle biting. On the upper Swannee River the wind blowing upstream is enough to cancel out the river flow. It’s like you’re going nowhere.

    Bamboo Pole?

I grow bamboo and was hoping to use it as building materials. Reading up on how to cure bamboo for use has put most of these projects on hold. There were three main cures. Heat fired. Long soak in salt water. And another. I’ve found that if I harvest mature stalks and do not let the touch the...

Has anyone been around the Whitney Wilderness Area this season?

I used to spend summers near there. Nearly needed panty change when the first ones came by. The sound comes out of nowhere. They were way low, right over the river. The noise was like a freight train barreling down on you.

    Prospector in Whitewater/Ollie Sandeman Video

Those are two very different kinds of whitewater. The kid is primarily handling big waves with a lot of back paddle. The first paddler can use more forward paddle and has to worry about dodging all the obstacles. I personally couldn’t even dream of either run.
