Megiscane Misery & The Clash: Trip Report spring 2025

Christian, thanks for that well-written, informative and amusingly self-deprecating report about your icebreaker mission. A question based on these quotes . . . . Did you have four guys in one canoe?

    What are you reading?

I haven't read books about canoeing or canoe tripping in decades. Why not? Well, I've been posting and reading about these subjects on the internet for decades. And I now own and administer the world's most active site on the subject. While trying to be the most active thread starter. Which...

Finding and remotely locking a lost smart phone

No, not for Android phones. The Google "find my device" feature, which is now called "Find Hub," can be invoked from a Google account on a computer or from any other Android phone (like someone else's). Don't know about iPhones. @stevet is one of our Apple experts.

    Gelcoat Crack Across Stem

If it's just a scratch in clear gel coat and not a crack in the laminate that compromises structure, I'd probably just leave it alone. Trying to apply a matching clear gel coat or a clear epoxy may end up looking messier than the scratch. You can probably hide most of the scratch cosmetically...

    small, local Canadier Camp

I had to look this word up, as I've never heard it before. I understand that open canoes are called "Canadian canoes" in Europe, and I myself sometimes use my own invented word "CanAm" canoe to describe open canoes derived from the hull shape of North American birch bark canoes. Maybe I'll now...

Finding and remotely locking a lost smart phone

My phone was found exactly where I thought it might be, and where the Android "find my phone" map feature showed it to be, and I picked it up at 7:30 this morning. I now put a pattern lock security feature on the phone, which is a minor pain, but the reality of losing my phone has now taken on...

Adirondack Freestyle Canoe Symposium July 17-20, 2025

Anyone can look for me. I'll be wandering around with a WCHA Board of Directors name tag on. Old guy with a beard, which probably doesn't narrow it down visually too much.

Finding and remotely locking a lost smart phone

This problem didn't arise on a canoe trip, but it could. I lost my smart phone somewhere yesterday, a new Pixel 9 Pro. It's not in my house or in my car. I'm sure it slipped out of my pants pocket when I was sitting in a chair, probably in a meeting I attended last night. I was very worried...

La Vérendrye: Canada’s Largest Canoe Camping Reserve

I'm pretty sure @Robin and @Gerald have paddled La Vérendrye more than once, so hopefully they'll chime in when they see the thread.

La Vérendrye: Canada’s Largest Canoe Camping Reserve

Here is your trip report thread, CTC. You just go to the beginning of the thread, copy its URL from the address bar in your browser, and paste that URL in the reply box here (after a line space, so it will "unfurl")...

Adirondack Freestyle Canoe Symposium July 17-20, 2025

Marc Ornstein used to run the Florida Freestyle Symposium in Yulee, just north of Jacksonville. It ran for a few years around 2010/11. I believe he now lives somewhere in west central Florida. Maybe he'll start something down there. The problem is probably that, even though Florida is a paddling...

Adirondack Freestyle Canoe Symposium July 17-20, 2025

I'll probably bring my Swift Kee 15 and leave it on my car during Assembly, perhaps to do some day canoeing somewhere in the Dacks before or after. My van for my wood/canvas canoe trailer isn't usable currently.

La Vérendrye: Canada’s Largest Canoe Camping Reserve

This Quebec gem is twice the size of Ontario's Algonquin Park and is reportedly much less crowded. "Boasting more than 800 kilometers of maintained routes traversing rivers, reservoirs and some 4,000 scenic lakes, Réserve faunique La Vérendrye is one of North America’s most expansive—and least...

    Reasonably Priced Bent Shaft Paddles?

I have both Carlisle and Mohawk straight paddles from my early canoeing days and, while I don't care for metal and plastic paddles in general, I preferred my Mohawks over Carlisles simply because they are lighter weight and less clunky.

    Thigh Straps for Seated Canoeing?

You're not being contrarian, but are simply reflecting the experience and preference of many folks, especially Canadians, who grew up using tandem canoes for all sorts of paddling in abundant waters, including solo, rather than in specialized canoes for different types of solo paddling. I feel...

Adirondack Freestyle Canoe Symposium July 17-20, 2025

Thanks for the reminder, Marc. I'm planning on being at the WCHA Assembly and sneaking over to Church Pond to visit the freestylers, too. Hope to see you there. Do you still live in NY or now in Florida?
