Indigenous teens to make first descent of entire undammed Klamath

43 native American youths are currently paddling the 310 miles of the now free-flowing Klamath River from source to sea. They departed on June 12 and plan to finish by July 11. Here are a press release along with a newspaper article and the website of the organization...

    Colden Dragonfly Repair

Looks like only the gel coat has been scraped off, leaving the fabric undamaged. I agree that you essentially need to remove any loose/loosening gel coat chips, then fill the gaps with some sort of thickened resin, and then smooth (sand) as best you can fair with the hull. The kit you found...

Load weight and trim and it's effect on stability.

This makes sense to me. To test this, check tandem hull stability with the same bow paddler sitting and kneeling. Kneeling should lower both the COG and the average hull contact load point—split between butt on seat rails and knees on hull bottom—and hence increase stability. And everyone...

Load weight and trim and it's effect on stability.

Have the bow paddler sit on the bottom behind the bow seat, and then compare the twitchiness to that when he or she is sitting on the bow seat. That will help suss out the effect of lowering the COG. I did that in Alaska in a 16' OT Penobscot with a fairly novice friend who weighed a bit more...

Thanks for that trip report and pictures, Chip. High water and a bit muddy. How did you work the bike shuttle, before or after the canoe run?

Videos: Canadian Style and Freestyle Paddling in Wood Canoes

Here is Sue Plankis demonstrating Canadian Style paddling in a wood/canvas tandem canoe. Note that she explains how heeling the canoe not only enhances turns, but also reduces the need for correction by shortening the lever arm between the functional "keel" and the paddle blade. In this next...

    Snake infested water bodies

To maximize safety when canoeing, wading and portaging in snake country, consider wearing snake boots such as the 18" LaCrosse Venom II. https://www.lacrossefootwear.com/venom-ii-18-nwtf-mossy-oak-obsession.html And for those serpents that drop out of trees, consider paddling under an umbrella...

    Campfire Pizza

Not in camp, but at home my mother used to make little pizzas with English muffins. Very nostalgic for me. Looks very good. Naan bread (India Indian) is very pillowy and tasty.

    Invasive species carried on canoes?

Does this happen? Where? And what kind of species? It certainly seems possible. What prompted my interest was THIS ARTICLE on the golden mussels danger to Lake Tahoe. "Last weekend, watercraft inspectors found golden mussels, a highly invasive aquatic species, on a 45-foot boat that was headed...

    Campfire Pizza

Pizza is one of my favorite foods, and seemingly a simple one, but I've never seen anyone make it in camp. This article . . . https://paddlingmag.com/skills/how-to-bake-backcountry-pizza/ . . . claims that "[d]one poorly, campfire pizza will have uncooked toppings and half-melted cheese on a...

I agree that a wide seat will be more comfortable for paddling heeled, Canadian style, as you say you intend to.
