DIY composite canoe with foam core

A side note about that polystyrene white bead board, sometimes called styrofoam. I have seen that foam installed in many motorhomes, both in floors and roofs laminated between various sheathings. I have also seen many of these structural element “composites” fail. As some here may know, I...

    Keels: Yeah or Nay?

I only have a very short, deep keel on one of my boats, but that’s a sailboat. Some would call it a centerboard. Keels on a canoe? A hull designed to go straight doesn’t. need one. A canoe designs for turning shouldn’t have one. A keel on a hull that needs one, due to manufacturing issues, sure...

DIY composite canoe with foam core

Alan, There has been much discussion around the dinner table about the best way to home build these full composite hulls. I think we came to the same conclusions as your methods just now. Minimal layers wet out over a non sacrificial plug, leaving stems open. Remove from the plug, close up the...

Time to build again - Short solo/kid's tandem

Alan, I used carefully placed supports, 3 of them, and measured the gunnel width at those support locations. I also temporarily screwed in place a few thwarts, which I removed after the foam was firmly adhered. The plug was laying nearby and I made sure to duplicate the dimensions before adding...

Fiberglassing a hard shoulder chine on a cedar strip

Consistency of saturation is one of the reasons why I ALWAYS apply a seal coat. It does look like you don’t have fully saturated cloth in that second pic. There’s a time constant associated with cloth wet out, it varies based on viscosity, cloth weight, weave type, number of layers, etc. It...

Music for the drive to, during, or the drive back from canoe trips?

On the way to, I listen to the radio. Oddly enough, even though I have 18 FM presets in the CRV, all buttons lead to WEQX. I've been listening to that same progressive rock, independent radio station (from Manchester, VT) since they came on the air nearly 40 years ago. In a world of...

    glassing the inside

I used the Intergrip stuff when I painted the topside and cockpit of the sailboat I built. Two coats of primer, two coats of Interlux paint, and then, after selective masking, two coats of the same paint with the non slip stuff added in It gave a very comfortable, non slip surface, that was also...

    glassing the inside

Texture is already there....just don't cover it up with too much epoxy! I've used some Interlux product, uhmmm, Intergrip. Added to any topcoat or resin. Really nothing more than glass micro beads.

    Hello from Fulton, NY

How many years was it for the xj to buggy transformation? You SOF build will be a heartbeat by comparison, I suppose. Since you’re wondering, (ok maybe you’re not), my CJ5 is a 1977. My straight six is rebuilt and slightly built, glass body, total weight around 2,200 lbs. I regeared and trussed...

    Hello from Fulton, NY

My son built a GA Snowshoe 12, coincidentally, when he was 12 years old. Of course, I helped. IIRC, his build ended up around 10 lbs. I built a steam box for him out of some 3" PVC drain pipe, and used a wallpaper steamer for the steam source. Leftover cedar for the ribs and stringers, GA kit...

    tinting epoxy

I've used quite a bit of pigments made for epoxy. As Alan said, the tinted resin, in my case, was not opaque enough to hide the color and grain of western red cedar when I built my stripped Kite. I have used black pigment with epoxy resin to give the illusion of carbon fiber when using...

    Wind threshold

Just got back from Iceland No paddling, but just hiking in sustained 35 mph winds ( with 50+ gusts) over lava beds really wasn’t that much fun. And last year, MDB and I paddled. A small ADK stream ( Minerva Stream)… In a spot with fully treed shores, I suddenly got pushed around, and saw MDB do...

    Things you've lost or misplaced on a canoe trip . . .

I have never lost anything in my 50 plus years of paddling/camping. Never!! However, I have cached some gear in strategic locations. For instance, I keep a Buck sheath knife in the bottom of Stillwater Reservoir. I also have a monocular stored just below a beaver dam on Brandreth Lake outlet...

New purchases that have been great, even game changers

Over the last 10 years or so, I've bought or made quite a few "game changers", all in the interest of lighter and/or more comfortable. Bought a Coleman 1 man "tent", more like a sarcophagus because it was lightweight. Replaced that with a solo Big Agnes tent, way more comfortable. Replaced my...

New cars: are they as impossible as they seem for cartopping?

All of these discussions are many of the reasons why I drive a 1977 Jeep CJ5. It’s as reliable as stone, and if a rare breakdown occurs, I can generally fix it roadside ( or trail side) with a hammer and chisel. Sadly, it’s not a good canoe transport vehicle…

Add Dental Floss to your repair kit

Haha Dental floss, so many uses… I recently did some engine work on my 1977 Jeep CJ5. I used some dental floss to hold the valve cover gasket (cork) in place on the valve cover while I reinstalled that cover. Those gaskets are infamous for leaking, mostly due to inattentive assembly. Dental...
