    Mountain House

Mountain House is my choice among the commercially prepared foods I've tried. Settled on them 20+ years ago after experimenting with others. While not fine dining, I find them quite tasty. My favorite is Beef Stroganoff. Rather than breaking down a 20 oz container, consider buying the...

    NRS Astral Men's Ronny

About 3 years ago I got an Astral Sea Wolf on sale and, hands down, is the most comfortable jacket I've ever worn. Great clam shell pocket that does not get in the way of paddling. Here's a review https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=f2q0NLbhD6c

    Centering a D ring

Yes I believe you are correct, so I put a level on a thwart and got it level before I started the barbell rolling

    The daily paddle

I might if I didn't have to drive to get there. However, I do have a paddling friend whose annual goal is to be outdoors 360 days a year. He'd rather paddle, but if conditions are bad he'll change sports - hike or ski. Being retired gives him a good shot at making his goal.

    Centering a D ring

In looking to find the bottom center of the hull, I've stumbled on a nice shop tip. Located a small 1 pound hand barbell with round end pieces and started it rolling until it stopped. That is bottom center.

    1928 Old Town "HW" 16'

A 21st century example of the philosophical question raised by the ship of Theseus, also known as Theseus's paradox. It is a thought experiment that raises the question of whether an object that has had all of its components replaced remains fundamentally the same object. If replacing...

Yet another tempting chair for the back country

No arm rests, no reclining, but it packs up small and has back support. Best of all the seat height is positioned just high enough that when you want to get up, you simply stand - no need for a two arm push off. Been my camp companion for 10+ years...

Cheat Sheet of Used Canoes for solo downriver CL II daytrips

Correction. On that trip I was in my Wenonah Advantage which is a hard tracking canoe so the Clipper of course turned easier. If Mike is correct on 1 1/2 inch rocker then the Clipper might handle wind issues reasonably well in the hands of a practiced paddler. In the canoe it felt like a fine...

Cheat Sheet of Used Canoes for solo downriver CL II daytrips

This was a 100+ mile multiday trip so he's carrying a tripping load. And I agree with Mikey, it did feel like a big boat despite it being a small canoe

Cheat Sheet of Used Canoes for solo downriver CL II daytrips

For what it is worth, I had the opportunity to spend an hour in one on some moving water and found it to be quite a nice canoe. More rockered than the canoe I was using so it spun a little more quickly than my canoe (OT Cascade). Without some good paddle skills I imagine it could be...

    Coffee Press

1 cup at a time, this coffee press is my preference these days. Makes a consistently excellent brew. Slightly bulky to pack, but worth it for me...

First day out with new boat and new canoe dog

GPS worked well in that location. The Garmin unit let us paddle a big circle through swamp

    PFD Pocket Contents?

On the PFD, blunt end Rescue knife, whistle, strobe/SOS light In the pockets - small sunscreen, lip block, about 15 yards of duct tape rolled around a small diameter section of pvc pipe, compass, signal mirror, small waterproof note pad with golf pencili in the spiral binding, one energy bar...

And so it begins... (Bell Merlin II Repairs)

I thought about the benefit of xtra wood along the gunwale, but at the end of the canoe is it that important? Drilling the longer hole in narrower stock wasn't an issue for me - I have a portalign drill press guide. I may have dropped down to a #8 machine screw. The feel to my hand when...

And so it begins... (Bell Merlin II Repairs)

Your carry handles do look bad and would be replaced if it were my canoe. A number of years ago I added carry handles to an older canoe. Bought the handles from Ed's Canoe and they are shaped much the way yours are, a curve cut into the square stock where you would place your hand. I...

Thoughts on a Bell Merlin ii (not that I'm looking for another canoe...)

My understanding is epoxy resin is UV sensitive and w/o a covering will fail on some level. So I've always either added carbon or enamel spray painted epoxy finishes in my interior repairs. I'm not sure how sensitive epoxy is to light, but I don't want to set myself up for another repair some...
