Satellite Communicator (Garmin In Reach Mini II) questions.

This is the problem with the Mini versions, for full functionality they need to be paired with a smartphone. I have an old Delorme InReach (no mapping), it's doesn't have as good of an antenna so connecting can be slow and it doesn't work well (slow) under heavy cover. I travel with people who...

Canadian HWY 389 and 510 to the East

I've been to Labrador City 4 times (or 5?), the furthest I've been on Hwy 510 is Churchill Falls. Hwy 389 I a great drive.....for the SCENERY! The road itself is rough, not as bad as it was 20 years ago when I made my first trip. There is construction is some areas, all part of 500 Million...

    Square back skid plate placement

Wherever the stern is showing some wear is the place the skid should go. It would be helpful if you posted some pics showing the wear.

What is your least favorite portage?

Yeah 100 rods is an acceptable length, that is "acceptable" not necessarily enjoyable. Of course I've had to do much longer. One portage that sticks in my mind is the "Two Pants Portage" around Ringham's Gorge on the Pukaskwa River (north side of Lake Superior).

Wollaston or Black Lake to Kasba Lake

At the very top of my bucket list (been in that position for 15 years) is a trip from Wollaston Lake to Baker Lake via Kasba Lake and the Kazan River. I made a preliminary map of the route here: https://caltopo.com/m/VDHC The map shows all the "portages" from Wollaston to Kasba, the part...

Night Fears: Worse with Hammocks than Tents?

The only time I recall a real "night fear" was not in a hammock, On the last night of a trip I decided to just use my bivy instead of putting up the tent. The only real purpose of the bivy was because I was camped very close to a significant rapid and thus the area as a lot of moisture in the...

    Need More Dad Lore

My top two and they have been there for a long time Wollaston Lake (Northern Sask) to Kasba Lake to Baker Lake via the Kazan River, 7 plus weeks Shefferville to Kuujjuaq (Northern Quebec) on the Swampy Bay River (4 weeks) For both I'm a bit hesitant to go solo, that hesitancy increases the...

    Leaving firewood at camp

Yeah the Scout groups especially and also some of the canoe camp groups are big on leaving stacks of nice processed firewood. Here is a camp on the Albany (I didn't have a fire), I found similar stacks at a number of campsites on that trip up until I caught up and passed that group of kids.

    Leaving firewood at camp

I have seen this a few times and usually in places where the birch bark was carried a long way given there were no birch trees of a size big enough within 100 miles or more.

Info on Chivelston, Harris & Harold Lakes outside Wabakimi?

Steve, sorry I didn't get around to responding to your PM. On my Albany trip in 2016 I took the train to Savant Lake and then got a road shuttle to Harris Lake to start my trip. The first portage from Harris to Harold Lake was a bit overgrown but still easy to follow, My first camp was near the...

    Chesuncook camping fees

Caveat; I've never been in that area........ Looking at the fee pages didn't provide much of an answer but looking at the map Ripogenus Lake is not within the NMW boundaries and for Chesumcook Lake only the west side of the lake is within the boundiaries (there is one marked campsite there)...

Pocket Canyon is it right for me?

I have a regular partner that uses a Pocket Canyon. "for river tripping with my dog, whitewater use and freestyle classes." Yes to river tripping, dog and whitewater, I think it would be horrible for "freestyle". I am 5'8" the Pocket Canyon is too wide (34.5") for my liking, I prefer a boat...

    So you think you're a fisherman/canoeist,

I've watched a lot of two tv series, Monster Fish and River Monsters (my preferred), they are all about fishing in remote locations for the biggest freshwater fish. The locations are place like the Amazon, Africa and a lot of them in South East Asia. River Monsters especially features indigenous...

    Leftover food

Midnight snack, next day breakfast or lunch........ That is for group trips, when I solo there is rarely any leftovers, if there is then burn or dump in the lake/river. Keep in mind that most of my tripping is in areas that rarely if ever have any significant amount of traffic and little or no...

    Hatchet or Saw?

For years a "dragged" an axe on canoe trips along with a few different folding bow saws, I did use both but not very much. I continued to bring them when I started solo tripping but so rarely made fires that it seemed like dead weight for no reason. In recent years I've changed to a small Bahco...

    Bamboo Pole?

I did a bit of searching online and found a bunch of references to bamboo poles, most of the stuff I found was related to "skiffs" rather that canoes. My original though was to find out what people in Asia or South America use for poling because I have seen plenty of examples of indigenous...
